Futuresource: Toshiba’s shift wise; Blu-ray to match DVD by 2012

I initially shrugged this report off, but then I thought about what’s occurred just in the last year and the progress that Blu-ray has already made. It’s the clear winner in the HD format with no competition, sure, but more importantly there has finally been released a sub-$100 blu-ray player from Wal-mart putting the players at a price point attractive enough to people needing a new DVD player. And that’s just now–a year from now you can be sure there will be more and even lower cost units available to make the decision that much easier. Long story short, this sounds pretty darned possible.

Hollywood in HighDef

With more than 1,100 BD titles to choose from, combined with growing retail support and increased promotional activity, the rise of Blu-ray will help to offset declining sales of standard DVD product. By 2012, around 50% of US and 35% of Western European video disc retail sale volumes will be Blu-ray.
