Sony to Recall Bravia HDTVs Due to Fire Hazard

Sony sells a lot of TVs, so the recall of 1.6 million Bravia HDTVs represents a fairly small percentage of the TVs that Sony has sold over the last several years, but any time a company has to recall a consumer electronics device because it might catch on fire, you can bet people are going to take notice. If you own a 40′ Sony Bravia made in 2007 or 2008, it might be a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detector. Here’s hoping this recall doesn’t get overshadowed by the latest round of PSN hacks.

After contacting Sony, owners of the affected Bravia models will be visited by repair technicians. If the TV has the faulty transformer identified as the cause of the issue, it will be repaired. Shima said that the company “may offer a rental TV” if the customer is going to be without his or her set as a result of the recall. There will be no replacements or refunds, however.
