Emporia Pro Level 2 EV Charger Launched

I hope that the Emporia Pro is an indicator of future Emporia EVSE design language. I think I prefer the industrial looks to their previous “Classic” models. Obviously, not for everyone though. Looks aside, the feature set of the “Pro” model is enticing – assuming you have an electrical panel that’s close to the edge.

Because the $599 Pro is bundled with a Vue 3, you can use it to monitor the total system load and dynamically alter the current advertised to the EV. This will allow you to legally install this EVSE in many homes that you wouldn’t otherwise be allowed to without a service upgrade, which can easily run into the thousands of dollars.

Very cool. All the necessary UL and NEC certifications are in hand, so you (and your insurance company) can sleep easier :).

If all that sounds familiar… “didn’t Emporia offer exactly the same feature set with one of their “Classic” EVSE with a paid firmware update?” It should… They did… I asked them about that and they confirmed it. So if you already have one of those, there isn’t anything new on offer here, at least functionally. You have the same pros/cons to how that worked. So you will need a functional Internet connection to get dynamic power scaling; that’s how the VUE 3 and Pro EVSE talk to each other (bummer). Don’t worry though, if the Internet is down, it’s still safe to charge. The EVSE will allow the “guaranteed charge rate” (i.e. the safest number).
