Blockbuster FINALLY Realizes 99-Cent Rentals

It only took the company going bankrupt, almost disappearing, and getting bought out by Dish, to FINALLY wake up and smell the coffee that people will not pay $5 to rent the same movie they can rent for $1 ANYWHERE ELSE! Kudos to the Dish management for making this happen quickly, it may very well save what’s left of the B&M stores. Is it too little too late though?

Blockbuster LLC, which is owned by Dish Network Corp., May 27 said it is cutting the single-day rental price on most movie titles to 99 cents – the same fee charged by kiosks.

Beginning today at 1,700 Blockbuster locations, consumers can rent select new releases for $2.99 ($1.99 for other new releases) on street date for the first night and 99 cents per day thereafter.

Blockbuster typically charged $3.99 to $4.99 for new releases (on street date) for five-day rental periods. The new pricing is designed to encourage single-day rentals, which of course improves in-store title availability.

I doubt there’s any way to make a profit with a physical store on 99 cent rentals. Goodbye B&M, hello kiosk.

I read the article as “First night costs 1.99 to 2.99” not 99 cents.

    • You are right. First night

You are right. First night rental is more. Following days are 99 cents.

    • If they every actually do

If they every actually do 99cents rentals, I wonder if they would finally get hit with the same 30 day window that Redbox and Netflix do.

  • gah, ur right, i was wrong.

gah, ur right, i was wrong. 🙁 BOOOO!!! Still, it’s progress somewhat!

And there’s plenty of ways to make a profit with 99 cent rentals! If volume increases exponentially and customers are non-stop coming in. Think about how many people buy the overpriced candy in that store. Or maybe they expanded and sold some DVD and BD players? Maybe some TVs? Plus they sell movies there as well.

    • The could offer dates for

The could offer dates for rental for an extra $99 with the movies.  I’m sure that’d help with their quarterly losses.

    • If you say so.

      If you say so.

  • The candy is what got me. You

The candy is what got me. You couldn’t stand in that line without the kids grabbing everything. 7 bucks in rental and another 15 in crap. It was cheaper to go the theater it seemed.
