Starz Working on New Netflix Deal

I have mixed feelings when I read a piece like that. Glass half empty says that prices will go up and Starz will try to corner Netflix into paying a lot. But here’s an interesting quote that I’m sure isn’t missed by the smart folks at Starz–subscriptions have actually gone UP. Go figure, when people see the GOOD programming that you have after a delay, maybe they’ll want to pay more to see it live.

Despite the Netflix controversy, Starz Entertainment had a sharp rise in customers during the quarter. The Starz channels finished the period with 18.2 million subscribers, up 800,000 from the third quarter, its biggest quarterly gain since 2007. Its Encore channels finished the period with 32.8 million customers, up from 32 million in the third quarter.

    Maybe I just don’t understand

Maybe I just don’t understand “marketing speak”, but are they saying:

    1.  Combined, Starz and Encore gained 800,000 subscribers?

    OR…

    2.  Starz gained 800,000 subscribers and Encore also gained 800,000 subscribers, for a total ot 1.6 million?

Regardless, this is undoubtedly due in no small part to their original content.  I don’t believe I had every watched a single show on Starz until Spartacus showed up.  I’m a bit skeptical about their new “Camelot” show, but I never thought I’d enjoy Spartacus, either.  I gave Pillars of the Earth a try, but I didn’t get hooked like Spartacus.  I’m sure I’ll finish watching Pillars at some point, though.

  • It is a certainty that Starz

It is a certainty that Starz will get more in their next deal for streaming license or they could go non-exclusive. I’m sure Starz will be trying to sell their content to other players like Amazon and Hulu that weren’t in the subscription streaming game back when the original deal was signed.

We had a free weekend of Starz last weekend on DirecTV.  I didn’t see anything on it worth paying to have.  The sad part was several of the movies they were showing were the same movies they showed the last time Starz had a free weekend.

Not a Spartacus fan i take it? 🙂

    • Then you must have missed

Then you must have missed Spartacus. I bet I sold the Starz network to at least 3 customers based on that show.

  • spartacus is easily the best

spartacus is easily the best softcore porn series ever made.

agreed, and i worry it turns off some fans (the nudity+blood) that might deter people from giving it a shot, even though it really is a great show (besides the aforementioned pieces).

Then again, the finale of Season Two…actually had me cringe (violence wise, not nudity)

        Thanks for not giving away

Thanks for not giving away any further details.  I’ve only watched a few episodes of Gods of the Arena so far and am thoroughly enjoying it.

Season 1 had me cringe a few times, particularly when Segovax* is… ummm… punished.

        * Man, did I have to search to find this guy’s name.

There’s no doubt that the show pushed (and continues to push) boundaries, but that’s also what made it appeal to a lot of people.  It wasn’t the same garbage (aka reality TV or some law drama), even if it was shown in the style of 300.  Had it not been for a friend of mine continually urging me to give it a shot, I never would have, based solely on the things you mentioned.  I’m a definite fan now.

BTW, I just read that Leslie-Ann Brandt (Slave Naevia) is leaving the show.

I don’t even remember Segovax. I just qeued up Firefly to watch it again. I think I’ll do the same with Spartacus: Blood and Sand

I kept getting Naevia mixed up with Melitta this season.

OMG. I just have to hear “The Ja.. scene” and I have flashbacks.

Being that the last episode was the series finale, they nailed it, I didn’t feel cheated like I did with the Sopranos, Rome,Firefly….

Now how long before the sequel to Blood and Sand comes out?

But without Spartacus….have to wonder what they’re gonna do. Anyone know if they’re replacing him or moving on like Gods with a different character lineup? I think i knew but forgot 🙂

    He was recast back in

He was recast back in January.  Liam McIntyre is taking over the role.  As I mentioned in another thread, I’m actually quite optimistic that this will work.  Everyone else (who’s still alive) is coming back, as is someone most presumed was dead.  I won’t give it away, in case anyone has yet to see the finale.

I missed something, I’ll have to rewatch the last few seconds. I might have an idea what you might be talking about.

This next fall should be good with all the successful shows that came out last year.

  • I CAN’T BLOODY WAIT!!!!!

    I CAN’T BLOODY WAIT!!!!! 🙂

  • I’ve probably gotten at least

I’ve probably gotten at least a half dozen people to start watching Spartacus. I’m so distraught now that Gods of the Arena is over! Such a long wait for more!

I’ll miss Andy, but going to give this new Liam guy a shot.

So long as Netflix still includes the show on instant steaming, I’m happy. If they stop it will be damn hard for me to wait for DVD.

I just watched the finale for

I just watched the finale for Gods of the Arena…  wow!  Impressive, but not quite as eventful as the Blood and Sand finale was.  It seemed like they squeezed a little too much into that last episode, trying to tie it into B&S.  I still definitely enjoyed it, however.
