Hauppauge Colossus HD-PVR Unveiled

While there isn’t very much information just yet, Hauppauge looks to have remembered us HD-PVR users.  This could very well be the followup to the HD-PVR we’ve all been waiting for.  I, for one, would welcome an internal version and I would hope that they have worked out the all the kinks.  I was also shocked to see the inclusion of an HDMI port for unencrypted HDMI signals.

  • I thought it was dual capture

I thought it was dual capture after seeing the picture initially but I guess the second break out cable is for pass through.  My first thought was, why would you want one internally especially given all the heat issues they had with the initial external devices, unless they’ve reduced the thermal footprint they’ve just put the cooling responsiblity on the consumer making it even more difficult to have a silent PC.  I guess the only way it makes sense is if using the PCI-E interface the device is less prone to lockups but if it isn’t, now it will requiresa restart of the system rather than of just the external device.

I don’t understand the inclusion of the HDMI capture port.  Are there that many HDMI signals that are unencrypted?  Maybe for console game capturing but unless the HDMI signal is passed out through the component cables, that doesn’t make much sense either.  Or are they’re expecting some hacker devices to be in play now that Intel has admitted that the HDCP private key has been hacked and are ensuring that the HDPVR can be used to capture from those devices?

Yeah, I had the same thought

Yeah, I had the same thought about the two sets of cables.  As far as heat goes, I’m guessing that this is a new chip or set of chips they’re using, so the heat may not be an issue any longer.  I highly doubt this is simply a repackaging of the HD-PVR to an internal card.  I’m sure the intent is to get rid of the issues the original HD-PVR had, as well.

  • The good news is that

The good news is that Hauppauge is working on new HD capture devices.

I don’t care if it’s internal or external, as long as they improve the stability of the card.

  • An internal card eliminates 2

An internal card eliminates 2 of the suspected problems.

1 –  going straight to the PCI-e bus eliminates the USB port or the chip        used (not an NEC chip set).

2 – no IR remote window.  No need to cover it up if your not using it.

#2 isn’t just a suspected problem, but a known one.  I experienced that one first hand.  But, you’re right about this potetially solving both, unless #2 is still an issue with the IR solution they included with this one.

  • I hope the native drivers

I hope the native drivers will be compatible with Windows Media Center.
