`Historic’ ruling opens HD radio

The FCC has approved HD Radio for the rest of the radio stations in the US. The big benefit for most of us is simply an improvement in the quality of the audio. However, now radio stations will be able to embed multiple streams in the same frequency. You should be able to get things like traffic, weather and artist's song and name :).

Every FM station will be able to broadcast new digital signals on its frequency, which will be picked up on new HD radios that are already on sale for $100 for portables and $160 for car receivers. All the radios will show song names and artists, weather and traffic. The decision — called “historic'' by FCC commissioner Robert M. McDowell — will also give terrestrial broadcasters a leg up in competing with satellite radio and offer formats that up to now have been considered too experimental, diverse or local.
