Killer deal on Hauppauge HD PVR

Thanks to ianjohnson over at TheGreenButton for letting us know.

TheNerds.net is selling the HDPVR for about $68 after shipping-

I don’t know why it’s so cheap, but I bought two.  The site says they have about 30 in stock.

  • Uh oh. This might end up

Uh oh. This might end up being another Target.com LOTR scenario.

  • sweet deal! i’m in for 2 as

sweet deal! i’m in for 2 as well. let’s see if they ship!

should note, the quantity didn’t go down after checkout for me. showed 33 before and after. ugh ๐Ÿ™

    • I hope they ship for you but

I hope they ship for you but don’t count on it. I’ve seen this retailer do this type of thing before on other products and they didn’t ship out.

  • Chris Lanier posted a link

Chris Lanier posted a link to http://www.resellerratings.com/store/TheNerds_net that had some pretty bad reviews.  I cancelled my order after reading the below.  I’m still bitter at Target.

This merchant is extremely terrible. They will charge you immediately, then cancel your order citing it’s a price mistake, then takes them 3 days later for a refund to your credit card. They should charge only if they were to ship the item and provide a tracking number. WILL NEVER BUY from this merchant again.

  • I ordered 3. ย The only

I ordered 3.  The only problem that I am seeing is that Google Checkout shows the HD-PVR and thenerds.com receipt shows WinTV-HVR1150 PCI InternalCard with the same part number.

well i took a screenshot of their product page if they try to pull any switch-a-roo. plus i’m sure this has been slickdeal’d by now, so i’m sure lots of people are going to be angry. i’m already preparing for a cancel e-mail ๐Ÿ™

Not like that would be your fault.  I’ve actually ordered from that place for work-related items in the past and didn’t have any issues.  That doesn’t mean they haven’t gone downhill, though.

  • Today (12/7/10) the going

Today (12/7/10) the going price is $58 USD.  I noticed they have the manufacters part# as 1228 (not 1212 or 1219 as shown on Hauppauge’s site.).

Very tempting price but if I were to buy this device again I would prefer the internal version when/if it comes out.

      It is definitely coming :oups:

  • so what do you guys think, i

so what do you guys think, i already got a tracking number for one of my orders. should i call and confirm they’re not retarded? or just wait and see what happens?

i took a screenshot of the product page with the picture of the HD PVR, so should be super easy to contest with Discover Card and Paypal.

    has anyone called?

  • George L. Schmauch Jr.

Just wait and see.ย  Why muddy

Just wait and see.  Why muddy the waters if everything looks like it’s going to work fine?  If it went out FedEx or UPS, then you can certainly see when it gets picked up and is on its way.

  • Is this a refurbished device?

Is this a refurbished device? Are they discontinuating the product?

  • Looks like the deal went

Looks like the deal went bad.  Got my package today and all I got was an empty envelope.  Called the Nerds and learned they posted the wrong price.

Keep us posted on how they handle your refund.  Absurd.

  • Waiting for my packages. ย I

Waiting for my packages.  I even tried to call them to confirm the part and no answer.  Not a good sign.

  • In the tgb post some one

In the tgb post some one received a response from their customer service stating they did infact send the wrong item due to an advertising mistake and that anyone who ordered needs to reject the package.  Complete crap.

  • Looks like I’ve got a package

Looks like I’ve got a package from thenerds that was delivered to my house. I came to check on this thread for encouragement, this doesn’t look good. Crap, I used paypal for the order; should have used a credit card. Maybe it will work out.

Paypal makes it very easy.  If they don’t give a full refund in a timely matter you can dispute the payment.

    • I emailed customer service

I emailed customer service telling them that I was worried about the product I received not being what I had ordered, here is their reply:

“Yes Sir, this was an item that was misadvertised in our website. We apologize for the mistake and the inconvenience.

I will be sending you the Fedex Label for you to return your item for a full refund.”

So it was too good to be true. Since they are sending me a return label, I might as well open it up and see what’s inside out of curiosity with the slighest bit of hope that it might be an HD-PVR. There doesn’t seem to be any point of arguing with them, so long as I get my refund promptly. Arguing certainly won’t convince them to send me an HD-PVR. Honest mistakes happen too often here, I accept that, but why on earth didn’t they catch this earlier? They had days to do this. Even now, I had to email them, they should have known that this order and shipment were wrong and informed me about it. I’ll certainly thinking thrice before ordering from these guys again. opps.

  • so i spoke to Robbie from

so i spoke to Robbie from their customer service. nice enough guy, except when he tried to justify their mistake saying “well we shipped the right part number, just not what was pictured” lol

Either way, they’re going to be issuing me return shipping labels and then refund when they receive. pretty typical. we’ll see if they slack once they get it, but i’m not too worried, just an annoyance.

  • George L. Schmauch Jr.

    I’m going to theorize that

I’m going to theorize that this was most likely an honest mistake.  If you look at their website, there’s even some links to additional stores to purchase the device from, since they’re out of stock.  Note that they do NOT link to an HD-PVR, but a lower priced card from Hauppauge.  If it was intentional, what did they gain by doing this?  Refunds, additional shipping costs via returns, bad press…  how is that good for business?  Unless they don’t give back the money (which I doubt), they’ve only lost time and money on the ordeal.

  • From the rating sites it

From the rating sites it appears to happen quite often with them though.

  • George L. Schmauch Jr.

Okay, I just read the first

Okay, I just read the first page of reviews and I’ll change my view of these guys now.  The only logic I can find in this is that they’re using the money as “loans” or even theft, causing the credit card companies to pay for the charges for the various delivery issues and then not being held accountable.  Could be as simple as credit card fraud.

I’d urge people to file complains with the BBB, since they currently have an A+ rating (?!?!).  While there are complaints, they’ve apparently been handled sufficiently, in the BBB’s eyes.  Again, file complaints people!

  • so, while i’d love to have an

so, while i’d love to have an HD-PVR for $55…my only gripe with them is that even the NEXT DAY it still was incorrect. That being said, i got my return shipping label already. Assuming a fast and prompt refund, I’m not going to hold a grudge.
