More Information About Echostar/Sage And Hauppage HD Capture Card

mikesm, from the SageTV forums, was at CES this an managed to track down a bit more information about the Echostar/SageTV/Pioneer setup and more information about Hauppauge’s upcoming HD Capture Card.

The good news is that the cap card is only a couple of months away and will capture 1080p in a H.264 format at a price tag of $250. Also good news is that other companies are working on such products. Great news for the DIY enthusiast. Bad news for the person who went the CableCard route ;).

The Dish box was streaming encrypted video to Sage running on the blue ray player using DTCP-IP. The sage player was not recording it, just playing it. From the conversation with the echostar guy, it sounded like they were not going to let another device record content, but rather provide it to a device that could display it in whatever UI the device wanted. This is unlike the cable guys who will allow other devices to display content, but only if they control the UI completely.
