Amazon Signs Deal with EPIX for Prime Instant Video
Amazon has been on a tear over the last year, regularly adding new content providers to their Prime Instant Video stable. However, the last few deals with companies like NBCUniversal Cable and Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution have been focused on building out Amazon’s collection of television content. Today, Amazon turned their attention to movies, signing a deal with EPIX. The deal with EPIX will add thousands of movies to Amazon Prime Instant Video including recent hits such as The Avengers, Thor, and Rango, along with a wide selection of other movies from EPIX’s studio partners. The cynical take has been that this deal is simply foreshadowing for a new Kindle Fire release, but I suspect that we will see plenty more such deals as Amazon increasingly establishes Prime Instant Videos as a Netflix-killer.
Today, Amazon and EPIX announce a multi-year licensing agreement in the U.S., which will add thousands of new releases, classic library titles and original programs to Prime Instant Video. Programming from the agreement includes movies from EPIX studio partners, Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, and Lionsgate.
