OPPO BDP-93 Blu-ray Player

We covered HDGuru’s review of this same BDP-93 Blu-ray player before, but it’s always good to get multiple perspectives. In Oppo’s case however, the results are usually the same–they just keep making phenomenal products. And at $500, it’s a bit more than average players but the quality is without a doubt top notch.

The key to the high performance is the Marvell Kyoto-G2 video processor with the second generation Qdeo™ technology. We saw a demo of their first generation technology at CES in 2008 and were impressed with what it did to content on an iPod. Adding this processing to Blu Ray made for some incredible images on our displays. For your DVDs, the OPPO performs Per-pixel motion-adaptive de-interlacing and advanced scaling to upconvert the source. Then the Kyoto-G2 applies its technology to create some of the best upconverted content we have seen in a Blu Ray player.

    I read the review and it sounds impressive for a stand alone player.  A few of the things flew over my head, but I’m curious, does it really offer anything quality wise that a decent HTPC with good video decoding couldn’t pull off for around the same price?

      big thing is true 1:1 pixel mapping, true 23/24FPS playback something that is still not 100% on HTPC’s.

  • From and analog audio

    From and analog audio perspective, without some heavy audio equipment onboard, the quality of D/A conversion is tough to beat. Additionally the unit does high definition audio codecs handled on the high resolution audio formats (DVD-A and SACD). 

    It may be true that a high powered PC could produce similar results video-wise, but unlikely in the same amount of space and quite possibly not for the same cost.
