Big and cutting edge displays reviewed

CNET are the lucky SOBs who got their hands on Samsung’s new 950 series LCD, this is their second generation local dimming LED backlight LCD set. This new technology is what is geting LCDs into Plasma territory for black levels, I talked about it recently in htpc_user’s thread about getting a new HDTV. Cnet was quite happy with the TV:

In short, the Samsung LN46A950 delivered the best picture quality of any LCD display we’ve tested yet. It’s by no means perfect, and we still give the overall nod to the top plasmas we’ve seen, but this set narrows the gap to within a hair’s breadth (and some off-angle issues). LED-based sets from other makers (LG and Sony) are due out later this year that may usurp the A950’s throne, but at press time the A950 is the undisputed LCD king.

On to plasma display news — The HD Guru (Gary Merson) got his hands on Panasonic’s new 65" 1080p plasma aimed specifically at custom installations:

The conclusion? The new Panasonic TH-65VX100 is overall the best flat panel tested to date, and should be considered by anyone contemplating a flat screen display in the 60”-65” screen size range.
