CES: Home entertainment’s future is interface, not hardware

Ars has a nice article up about the future of multimedia entertainment. We have seen electronics perform more and more duties over the years and its all race to take control of the livingroom. Microsoft knows it, Apple knows it and even SageTV knows it. Ars profiles a couple of different companies and how they plan on winning the race to your TV.

The other parallels between the new devices and efforts from Microsoft and Apple are pretty clear: these devices don’t just handle video on the TV—they handle all digital media. Photos, music, video, and cable programming all get accessed through the same interface. Both of the companies even demonstrated a set of simple, iPod-level games that come as part of their software.
