D-Link Adds “Private Cloud” Feature to Routers

Exposing USB connected storage through the router isn’t a new concept, but it is nice to see D-Link catching up to what the other players in this space are doing – especially as the feature will be pushed down to currently deployed hardware, even if it is limited to the newest “AC” kit.

D-Link Gives Customers Ability to Turn Existing USB Drives into Free and Private Cloud Storage

D-Link® 11AC Wi-Fi Routers Equipped with USB Port Combined with mydlink SharePort® App for Private Cloud Storage without Added Monthly Fees

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. – Oct. 22, 2013 – With an estimated 10 billion wireless devices currently in use1, consumers depend on cloud services for streaming media or sharing files on a smartphone or tablet. D-Link now offers an alternative solution for private cloud storage with its latest mydlink SharePort® app, turning any USB storage device connected to a compatible D-Link 11AC Wireless Router into a private cloud, accessible anywhere in the world on an iPhone®, iPad®, or Android device via the free app.

“Combined with D-Link’s award-winning 11AC routers with next-generation Wi-Fi speeds, the mydlink SharePort app offers an easy way to view and share content, creating a private and personal cloud that instantly adds storage to your mobile device, giving you more options to control what information you put on your personal cloud versus public cloud,” said Daniel Kelley, vice president of marketing, D-Link Systems, Inc. “Stream your favorite music, play a photo slideshow, or even view documents offline while you’re traveling. And, all files are kept on your own USB hardware, safe at home, limiting access to your content – it’s your data, your hardware and your very own private cloud.”

The free mydlink SharePort app works with D-Link’s 11AC Wireless Routers, offering next-generation wireless speeds for uninterrupted HD video streaming and high-bandwidth activities. Using D-Link’s industry-exclusive USB SharePort technology and the mydlink SharePort app, users can access and stream videos, music, photos, and more from a connected USB drive directly to their iPad, iPhone or Android device anywhere. Simply plug a USB storage drive into a mydlink SharePort-enabled D-Link router, including the Wireless AC1750 Router (DIR-868L), Wireless AC1200 Router (DIR-860L), Wireless AC1200 Router (DIR-850L), and Wireless AC1000 Router (DIR-820L), and easily access content saved on the drive on a mobile device anywhere there is an Internet connection. In addition, the app’s user-friendly interface allows users to easily find files by category, including music, videos, photos, and documents.

The mydlink SharePort app can be used at home to stream and access content from a connected USB drive to your mobile device without the need for a computer or additional device. The same app can be used remotely anywhere with an Internet connection to provide seamless access to your content using the free mydlink service. In order to use mydlink SharePort Remote Access, a D-Link 11AC Wireless Router must be registered with the mydlink service. Once the router is registered, the free mydlink SharePort  app can be downloaded on a smartphone or tablet for remote access to media and other files on connected USB storage. Movies, music, and photos can all be streamed directly or copied for later, which is great for long trips away from Internet access.

Availability

The free mydlink SharePort app is now available at the Apple App Store and Google Play. Detailed specifications and information about the mydlink SharePort app and D-Link’s complete 11AC Wireless Router line are available online at www.dlink.com/yourcloud.
