This will never happen, mostly because networking OEMs aren’t really into doing anything for free*, but also because when you look at what the researchers at BYU have done it doesn’t really deliver a practical benefit. Holding on to a painfully slow (i.e. less than 1Mbps) connection isn’t really very useful for devices that people actually use. But, for IoT […]
Read moreNot willing to be outdone by Amazon, Newegg appears to have leaked the existence of a SHIELD TV dongle. Spec’s (including Dolby Vision and upscaling capability), and price, appears to be very similar to the “Pro” model so this is mostly a form factor thing. Getting to the brass tacks, this Android TV tube features a Gigabit Ethernet port and […]

I love my SHIELD TVs. They are brilliant in a way that the HTPC just never quite got to (despite my best efforts). But, that’s not to say that the current device is perfect. With the most glaring feature miss, besides automatic refresh rate changing, being the lack of Dolby Vision (aka, the better HDR) support. Well, it looks like […]

Konnected has announced its next line of products. Given I am a huge fan of Konnected’s hardware and setupm I am excited. This truly is an amazing system to convert older wired alarm systems into a smart home. I use it with Hubitat and it is by far the most reliable piece of Home Automation Software I have. I […]
Read moreIt’s an odd one, and I can’t find any good information around what the issue is, or how long they expect 4K UHD to be disabled on the Shield TV. The link in the email VUDU sent me (below), just goes to the forum where, if there is information on this issue, it’s really well hidden. Nvidia has made us […]

Wahoo, and a slew of other companies, just announced a “smart” indoor training bike. They’re all expensive, Wahoo’s is $3500 (pick up your jaw), and I do not understand why anyone (who isn’t a professional eSports <shudder/> rider) would buy one. To be clear, this is a whole other product category compared to things like Peloton; which is a stationary […]
Read morePersonally, I’m on the fence for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, but if you’re sold on the MCU and the massive amount of Star Wars and super hero content that will surely gush from the mouse’s maw – now is the time to lock in a massive [relative] discount on the service. On Monday, Disney opened up discounted online preorders for […]

It saddens me a little to learn that Plex has decided to remove the 10′ “HTPC” interface from it’s PC version, but in truth it doesn’t really surprise me. Personally, I haven’t had a HTPC hooked up to my TV in a few years now. Devices like the NVIDIA Shield (what I replaced my HTPC with) are so capable, that […]

There are myriad quiet PSU out there, but Fractal Design’s new Ion+ Platinum is the first I’ve seen that can be configured to run in a semi-passive “Zero RPM” mode. Which frankly sounds like the perfect approach to selecting a PSU for a HTPC, or any PC, that will be used in a noise sensitive environment. Introducing the Ion+ Platinum […]
Read moreI’ve considered building a “smart” fan controller several times, but my planned implementation (rPi + ANT dongle + dimmer) is nowhere near as slick as what Keith has implemented. Which makes sense, because his plan could actually include selling it… Count me in.
