Blu-ray Releases – June 7, 2011

After weeks of 15 or 20, here we have over 50 new Blu-ray releases!! So I hope you’ve been saving your nickels! 🙂 There are a lot of good films to choose from here. If you are feeling silly there are some Adam Sandler classics like “Billy Madison” and “Happy Gilmore” which were great comedies, assuming you like Sandler. I was tempted to select The Superman anthology, but I just couldn’t remember if most of those selections were good are just funny, but I’ll probably watch them again now that they’re on BD. Same with “The Outlaw Josey Wales” featuring Clint Eastwood in one of my favorite westerns ever, easily worth a watch.

MissingRemote’s Pick of the Week

After debating for quite some time I settled on the 2010 Oscar-nominated True Grit film, a remake of the same-titled original from 1969 which featured John Wayne (and earned him an Oscar). While I had expected more action throughout I absolutely enjoyed the film for all its, for lack of a better word, grittiness. Jeff Bridges plays a drunken marshall who is hired by a young girl whose father has been killed by Josh Brolin, so they set out to catch him. Matt Damon plays a Texas Ranger who has also been hunting Brolin’s character for various other crimes. The movie is a drama but there are some action scenes and a few laughs sprinkled throughout to make this an awesome movie. I actually watched the original afterwards and they’re nearly identical–so if you have seen that one, be prepared. Otherwise, enjoy!

Note:  Warner Brothers, Universal and Fox titles which  have the 30-day Netflix/Redbox rental window imposed on them are noted with **  next to the title.

  • Looks like I’ll be renting

Looks like I’ll be renting True Grit tonight.

Btw, for you comic and cartoon fans…Green Lantern: Emerald Knights was pretty good.

  • I’m not sure what they

I’m not sure what they changed with Rome BDs, but they are an awesome experience on BD. I wish they could have had the budget for more seasons.

  • Several good picks in this

Several good picks in this crop.  Outlaw Josey Wales is by far one of my favorite Clint Eastwood flicks and also one of my favorite westerns.  Rome was a great series that was cut too short, IMHO.  Bridge on the River Kwai is a classic, plain and simple.

The first Superman movie was great and set the bar for all other comic book movies to follow.  The 2nd thru 4th Superman movies got progressively campy and silly, although I thought Superman 4 had a decent storyline but suffered from a bad screenplay and mediocre direction.  Superman 3 with Richard Pryor was simply bad.  The director took too many liberties with Superman 2 when he started giving him abilities that every Superman fan knew the Man of Steel never possessed.  It was clear the director and screenwriters knew nothing about the character.

True Grit is scheduled to arrive on Blu-Ray from Netflix this very day so I look forward to viewing it when I get back from vacation .

  • If you’ve never seen Superman

If you’ve never seen Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, it’s worth checking out.  While it’s a little rough around the edges in HD since it goes back to workprint film for some of the scenes, it’s still impressive.  The camp from the director they replaced Donner with in the 2nd film goes away and it has a much different feel (personally I think it’s way better and would’ve made for a better franchise if they’d kept him on).

  • I might have to get the Jet

I might have to get the Jet Li 3 pack.  Fists of Legend is one of the best martial arts movies of all time.

Also, True Grit was based on the book.   Heard a radio interview where the Coen brothers say they went to the book for this movie, didn’t even rewatch the John Wayne version before making this version.
