HD Guru Reminds Us to Update Firmware

I have to admit it was strange to find a section in the menus for updating the firmware on my new TV.  The surprising thing wasn’t that it was necessary, but that it was so accessible.  Some may complain about the need to do it in the first place, but to be honest I’d rather have the hardware now and let the features come in as they are ready instead of having to wait – but that shouldn’t surprise anyone in the HTPC community.

In the days of
standard definition analog television, you would take your new TV home,
plug it in and watch it. It played exactly as the engineers intended it,
only requiring tweaking of the user controls to optimize the available
settings, or hiring an ISF calibrator to make fine adjustments via the
set’s service menu. For better or worse, those days are over.
