Xbox One Isn’t A Native Media Center Extender

I honestly don’t quite know how to feel about this finally officially confirmed news that the new XBox One won’t include the Media Center Extender infrastructure. I always suspected that this was the case, but officially hearing it is a sad ending to this journey. Windows Media Center is clearly not in the company’s plans in the future. Sad day.

Will Xbox One work as a Windows Media Center Extender? For those that use a PC with TV tuner to record and watch TV, we use the 360 as an extender to stream this content to TVs. Will this continue with Xbox One?

WHITTEN: Xbox One isn’t a native Media Center Extender. We’ll continue to work to enable more ways for everyone to get the television they want over the life of the program.

  • At this point, I wish

At this point, I wish Microsoft would just release the Extender code as an app via the Windows 8 store.  Then we could just build cheap boxes to do the job.  But I guess that’ll just be a pipe dream for me.

  • Saw that coming
    I just wish

    Saw that coming 🙁

I just wish MS would either make a comittment to WMC or not. I keep wondering if/when MS will just stop paying Tribune for the TV guide data and then really screw over existing WMC users. That issue alone is what makes me really weary to get back into WMC, even with the awesome 6-tuner Ceton hardware tugging at me!

The word “native” confuses me. Maybe the extender software will be available for download…

I saw that too, and that was the discussion I had with some friends.. They use certain keywords there and we found some uses of that, and it turns out later it was supported by another app. If they are letting people develop and use each xbox as a deleveloper kit, maybe it will not be to long before someone develops that app.. *wishful thinking*

      • Yep. Or maybe Microsoft will

Yep. Or maybe Microsoft will sell the extender app via their Xbox App Store…

  • Microsoft continues to flip

Microsoft continues to flip flop on almost all there services.
It sends a very confusing message to consumers.
