normally I am in favor in disabling UAC, but if you have a smartphone and a remote app (that connects via home network) that you might actually want to use from time to time you can’t disable UAC. for whatever reason, to protect those who have specifically chosen to not protect themselves, microsoft disables being able to pass keystrokes over the network with UAC disabled.

Maybe its been fixed since I ran into that problem a while back, but I doubt it.

i looked it up and it was the 75GXP line that had all the problems. I think they did have a 75GB model, but I remember it being the 30GB models that were notoriously bad. of course, i could be wrong. it wouldnt be the first time.

was it the IBM deskstar 30GB that had all the problems and eventually lead to IBM selling their HDD division to hitachi? if so, i had the same one and used it for years without issue. i got lucky.

in reply to: my win7 htpc installation #3610
            DavidStein

my win7 htpc installation only takes up maybe 25GB so i use a 64GB SSD as the boot drive. you can probably save money there if its just going to be used as an htpc.

also i honestly can’t imagine not buying 2TB drives for your raw storage. the WD green drives are like 80$ as a regular price on newegg

in reply to: moving to an SSD was easily #3585

moving to an SSD was easily the most valuable upgrade I have ever purchased for a computer. and while my win7 partition is really only using 28GB with all of my programs and files installed, so i could make a 60GB partition work even with installing a game or two at a time, I think it would be just much easier to combine it with a 1-2TB platter drive and let the motherboard/OS do all the work of figuring out what files needed to be stored on the SSD without me having to think about it. but of course only time will tell if it actually works as well well as it could.

and here is hoping for your sake that the z68 boards do start rolling out in the first week of may. i have to wait til june regardless so i have a month’s buffer, but it could be kind of tough waiting on a delay if you are ready to purchase today.

obviously we could come up with some other applications where the difference would be more noticable, but for gaming the max difference between the 2500k and the 2600k is about 6-7% in fallout 3, with the median being more of a 1-3% increase.

I myself will be buying a 2500k in june, and probably pairing it with a 6950 (most likely to pair it with the firmware upgrade to make it a 6970).

i am interested in seeing the z68 chipset motherboards come out as well, mainly for the SSD caching, though we will have to wait for the reviews to come out to see if works as advertised. though to be fair, i say this as someone who has a 60GB vertex2 as my boot drive on my main machine currently, so its more or less the perfect size to use as a cache.

is there any reason it wouldnt be possible to have something like macrotube to allow a (albeit not perfect) form of integration into 7mc?

                      jealous!

i wont have a reason to upgrade my computer until october/november when the new elder scrolls game comes out. But I am definitely going sandy bridge when its time.

                          DavidStein

you could try to update to the newest iOS version, its supposed to help the 3G. and its an old enough phone that the jailbreak works for it no problem.

otherwise, you are kind of out of luck. its a 400Mhz processor trying to run the same OS (almost) as a phones with 50%+ and 100% more processing power.

I am somewhat confused that HBO doesn’t sell streaming subscriptions online. They must have some dcontract with cable/sat companies that prevents it because otherwise it seems like a no-brainer. what does HBO care if I am subscribed to comcast digital cable or not so long as they are getting their monthly subscription fees?
