*** FIXED – Restored System Image – All is go:D ***
Well this got lots of looks here (86+), AVS (150+), TGB (100+) and even M$ (50+) TV and Movies Forum. But had almost zero responses. No wonder, I still don’t know what caused my WMC to not being able to output audio in exclusive mode, but after restoring my system back to an image I made just a month ago all is well. I’m guessing switching audio inputs from HDMI to digital and back was the root of the problem and broke something in the chain – not a codec or incompatable driver.
I posted this over at TGB, here:
http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/t/98557.aspx
I’m hoping the group of guru’s that I trust here at Missing Remote can help me out, So:
I’ve had this problem for a few weeks and tried to troubleshoot it this weekend.
In windows control panel/sounds/playback device: I have always set my HDMI audio to output 7.1 (since I have a 7.1 system). This has always worked for properly sending the correct audio channels to my AVR to decode.
I have a 5850HD + i5 + 8GB RAM + WIn7 x64 + InfiniTV
WMC7 and/or WMP12 palying live TV has always properly decoded 2.0 and 5.1 audio correctly to my Denon 3310CI.
The Denon would take in a 2.0 feed from my HTPC’s HDMI and output as Dolby Pro Logic II or take a 5.1 Dolby Digital audio and then output as Audyssey DSX. This is what I want and it has worked this way for a long time until recently. On the Denon I have a status button that shows what type of signal is being sent to it. When it worked properly I would get DD 5.1 for DD 5.1, BUT now all I get is PCM 7.1 (even for a 2.0 audio track). There seems to be a translation/decoding going on before the audio hits the Denon. I no longer get audio output to my rear surrounds either. Again this is only for WMC (live + recorded TV and .avi’s or other native audio that WMC will play. I do have a XBOX360 extender that is getting the proper audio signals when playing TV. It is also hooked into an AVR that is getting the proper 2.0 or 5.1 signal. So, that is not broken. I have not gone directly from HD5850 to TV either – that doesn’t make much sense yet. It seems all TV is being decode to PCM 7.1.
I have tested the same 2.0 .avi on WMP and it will output a 7.1 signal. BUT, when I play that same 2.0 .avi with MPC-HC I get the proper output to my Denon. So, this tells me it is NOT my Denon settings (which is where I started to troubleshoot).
Also, my Blu-ray’s and .mkv’s get the proper channels output to the Denon using both MPC-HC + ffdshow and TMT 5.
I did try to set my sound device to output 2.0 and then go into WMC settings/sound and set it to output 7.1 as described here:
http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/p/92303/476637.aspx
I also disable WMC sounds. When I set the audio device to 2.0 – all I would get is 2.0 from a DD 5.1 feed as well. I am running the latest CCC 11.1 (was running CCC 10.12 – was working then broke). Updating to 11.1 had no change in the way my audio channels are being mapped to my Denon. TMT 5 still decodes HD audio perfectly.
So, before I go back and revert to my last working system image (only a month ago) and then have to update WHS connector, MediaBrowesr, InfiniTV beta HW + SW and drivers.
The only thing that I think may have broken my WMC TV audio playback is Ceton’s InfiniTV4 beta HW + SW. This and an update Shoutcast Radio has been all that has changed on my bullet proof HTPC. But this seems unlikely.
I did see from this link:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18241300#post18241300 that there is a complicated way to get Graph Studio to see what filters are being used for WMC, but I’m not prepared to go there yet (I’d rather just retore my system to an eariler image and re-install a bunch of updates)
BTW, I’m curious what SP1 will break in 10 days
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I’m afraid this won’t help, other than the “misery loves company” factor, but I posted a similar complaint about a WMA 5.1 audio track in a WMV file here: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/p/95990/512026.aspx#512026
Works perfectly in WMP, but not in WMC. Absolute slience from the Microsoft crowd when I know there’s someone there who can explain the issue. Not sure why we’re getting the silent treatment on this one.
Reading in more detail, it does seem your situation is slightly different since you went from 5.1 Dolby to 7.1 PCM. I suppose you already confirmed that the “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and “Give exclusive mode applications priority” is set on your playback devices -> properties -> Advanced tab? If not, it may be forced into shared mode, which cause it to go through the software mixer.

Thanks for the reply/replies
Yes, this is true “I suppose you already confirmed that the “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and “Give exclusive mode applications priority” is set on your playback devices -> properties -> Advanced tab? If not, it may be forced into shared mode, which cause it to go through the software mixer.”
I’ve reset these same settings thinking they just needed a reset, but not working still. I’m puzzled, to say the least. My WMP and WMC both can’t decode 5.1 properly.
As you noticed my TGB post (I also have one at AVS as well). Nobody seems to have an answer.
Thanks

I wonder if my HDMI driver (11.1) could be the culprit. Saw this post at AVS:

Is anyone having issues as described? WMC pause killing DD decoding?
