I have been contemplating this build for a while, but only now have made the move to create. My goal in building my own case is to create a unique appearance that not only provides a custom feel but doesn’t look out of place.

Initially I thought I would use an antique radio, providing a timeless look with ample space. These little parcels are tough to come by and pricey as well. This being the case, as well as all my other equipment being black or silver, I decided to pursue a vintage AM/FM Stereo Receiver.

Finally deciding on an older receiver, I located a unit this past weekend to begin my work. (See link for album images)

I plan on removing all the old bulbs and replacing them with various LED’s. This will allow reliability in panel function, as well as providing a clean appearance.

The power button for the receiver will power on the system. There will be an IR receiver for the remote placed behind the panel. [s]I intend on turning the volume knob into a dimmer for the backlight (It bothers me when it is too bright).[/s]

[/s]I am afraid I will not be able to fit a DVD or BR player in the unit, as space will definitely be tight.[/s] I will also likely run into some thermal design challenges (Those Should Be Fun).

    To Do List:
    [s]- Order LED’s[/s]
    – Cut shaft of final knob
    – Wire System
    – Build Chassis
    – Order remaining HTPC Components
    – Build mobo tray

    Completed
    – Rip apart receiver
    – Acquire CPU
    – Acquire Memory
    – Acquire Mobo
    – Acquire HDD

Any thoughts are more than welcome. Particularly ideas regarding fitting a DVD or BR player in the unit in an inconspicuous manner.

One problem I have encountered is that the unit is only 4.5″ tall, meaning I need 1.5″ of additional space. I plan on placing beveled edges on top and bottom and split the space. If this turns out ugly I will most likely pursue alternate paths or return to the receiver hunt. Best part thus far is the reciever only cost $4.98… Woot for thrift stores!

    And so the saga begins…
