The question really says it all, I think. The reader I’m eyeing is this one:

If I want to play BR from the HDD, do I even need to spend double for a 3D Bluray drive for the ripping? And they all seem to be writers, which I probably don’t need, like this one:

P.S. – I do realize if I want to watch it straight off the 3D disc, I’ll need a reader that supports 3D.

You do not need a Blu-ray Disc (BD) writer. 3D will work from any BD reader. You will be able to rip the BD content using any BD reader.  You will need the appropriate software package to play 3D Blu-ray content back as well as a newer GPU that supports frame-sequential 3D (see our GPU comparison).
