I disagree with “Beware the WD Green Drives”. Reading the Synology link points to only certain WD Green models has having issue in RAID, the lower cost models.

From day 1 of the 1TB WD Green drives I remember reading “Not recommend for RAID configurations” (or something to that extent) so while it sucks to lose data I don’t sympathize that much either.  I believe a firmware update was released to help mitigate some issues but very few consumers actually apply hard drive firmwares.  I’ll find references and update accordingly.

If you know enough to setup hardware RAID, do a little research on the drives as well.

I’m using 12x 2TB WD Green drives in RAID6 myself and was previously running 8x 1TB WD Green without issue.  I did apply the updated firmware and when purchasing 2TB drives I made sure to get ones more suited towards “server” use (WD20EARS).  I couldn’t justify the extra cost of WD Black drives though I would have liked to.
