I’m about to build a new HTPC, and a friend suggested that I leave my main OS install as clean as possible, and use a virtual machine for all of my actual applications.  I can see several advantages of this, not the least of which is each of backups and restores — I can simply clone a VM and if it goes down or gets corrupted, just use the clone.

However, I’m worried that the VM layer would mess with the drivers for the Hauppauge tuner cards and any other devices that I want to use.  Is anyone out there using VMs now in their HTPC?  Does anyone know if the drivers for multimedia devices support this type of setup in a stable way?

    Thanks for any insights!
