Great write up John. This will be useful for me as I’m trying to force myself into using linux as a fileserver. I’m in the process of setting things up again since I upgraded the server last month. One thing I used to have SSH for was having my digital photo frame automatically sync with a picture directory on the fileserver. It was easier for my gf to access the fileserver from her windows pc via samba to add or remove pictures for the photoframe. I had a cron job to periodically performs a synchronization with the photo directory on the fileserver, so I almost never needed to touch the photoframe. It wasn’t perfect, but your guide has helped me understand ssh more and will make it easier for me to set this up for the second time.

    Thanks.
