Hi Guys,
I have an HTPC that I built a while back. My question/problem is a simple one. Vista runs like a sloth with a ketamine habit on this box and I can’t sort it out. I’ve installed available updates; I’ve tried disabling Aero stuff, readyboosting, followed a ton of suggestions about speed tweaks for the OS, updated the mobo bios.
Despite all that, a simple security update installer will spin for a half hour, apps take five minutes to launch. Something is wrong and I can’t figure it out. Also, the cpu usage in the Task Manager looks a bit sketchy to me, but I’m no expert – it’s jumping up to like 50 or 60% when I’m idle.
This box oughta be studly enough to run the copy of Vista Home Premium (64bit) that I got about that same time I built it. Yeah, it was two years ago, but it scores 5.7 or beter on everything but CPU where it gets like a 3.8 or something I think.
XP Pro is rock solid and runs great, but I need more ram for HD video editing and I wanna be able to finally use a media center OS with my projector instead of moving from my couch to my desk all the time. But Vista is so cripplingly slow that I’m stuck with my old 32bit XP Pro install (I have it partitioned to dual boot, I should mention that as well).
Sorry for the long post – I wanted folks to know what I’d already tried.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
