News - May 4th Blu-ray Releases

A lot of titles this week, but there really isn't anything I'm super excited with. I would like to take this moment to comment on how dreadfully awful Leap Year was. Seriously, I'm not opposed to a good romantic comedy, but WOW that movie was painful to watch! On that positive note, let's go with a classic for our pick...

MissingRemote's Pick of the Week

A no-brainer if you've never seen this before, arguably one of the best war movies of all time. Spielberg, Hanks, Matt Damon, and lots of action scenes sure to be optimized for your home theater.

Note:  Warner Brothers,Universal and Fox titles which  have the 30-day Netflix/Redbox rental window imposed on them are noted with ** next to the title.

News - April 27th Blu-ray Releases

Note:  Warner Brothers,Universal and Fox titles which  have the 30-day Netflix/Redbox rental window imposed on them are noted with ** next to the title.

What a great week of options for you today, as if last week's Avatar wasn't a pleasantly fast surprise! A ton to choose from this week after a couple slow weeks. If you are looking for a fun, action packed movie and don't mind subtitles, France's District B-13 is fantastic (the sequel not nearly as good but still entertaining). Then we have quite a few classics in there as well. Imagination of Dr. Parnassus was of course Heath Ledger's last film, and...well, it's weird. Very weird. Lots of cameos from some famous actors couldn't save it for me however as it was just all over the place. But hey, might be your thing. Five Minutes of Heaven was solid by the way--although not nearly as intense as Taken, Liam Neeson delivers a fine performance as usual.

MissingRemote's Pick of the Week

Had to go with one of my all time favorites in Tombstone. For being such a long movie, I've seen this as much as any other. Val Kilmer as a great Doc Holiday, and a great supporting cast, if you haven't seen this by now....well, you're probably much younger than I am. This is a great film and I'm looking forward to seeing it in high definition and replacing my abused DVD finally.

News - Skip the DVD Trailers & Go Straight to the Movie

Here's an interesting article with all sorts of workarounds for bypassing trailers and warnings on your movies. Of course, if you pirate your movie (or rip them yourself) you never have to deal with any of these....just saying.

The easiest way to skip (or fast forward) all the ads, warnings and trailers from the DVD movies is this -- just press the Stop button on the DVD remote followed by the Menu button and it will take you straight to the main menu from where you can play the movie.

News - April 20th Blu-ray Releases

Reminder:  Warner Brothers,Universal and Fox titles which  have the 30-day rental window imposed on them I am placing ** next to the title.

A healthy amount of releases this week. 44 Inch Chest is a goodie with all sorts of older British actors I quite enjoyed. Crazy Heart was a good one as well, of course it being Jeff Bridge's Oscar-winning performance. I didn't think it was that amazing but it's still worth a watch to be certain. Same thing for Lovely Bones, a fairly sad movie that received a lot of positive reviews that underwhelmed me. Pick of the week however is a no-brainer.

MissingRemote's Pick of the Week

Technically this doesn't come out until Thursday the 22nd, but it's still within the week so I had to give it the nod. I wasn't head over heels like a lot of people, but the movie was incredible nonetheless. 3D fans will be disappointed to not be able to get it (yet), and I'm sure we'll see about 10 more versions of this on Blu-ray before the end, but for now this is a great movie and its a ridiculously fast release schedule given how long it was dominant in the box office. I know I didn't mention anything about the film, but I figured you all already watched it at least once :-)

News - April 13th Blu-ray Releases

EDIT:  Well, not just tracking the Warner Brothers movies, I am now also noting the Universal and Fox titles which will have the 30-day rental window imposed on them by placing ** next to the title.

Not a lot of releases this week after last week, guess it comes in waves. That being said, still some solid releases of classic films Apollo 13 and Gone With the Wind. I haven't seen Pirate Radio, but have heard mixed reviews. Pick of the week though....a "classic" in different sense of the word.

MissingRemote's Pick of the Week

I know...I know, I should be excited to see a new Apollo 13 and Gone With The Wind releases on Blu-ray, but sorry....the horror fan in me has to go with one of my all time favorites. This is still one of the greatest that basically put Wes Craven on the map. How do you feel about the remake? Looks like they'll tell a bit more story about how Freddy came to be, so yeah, no surprise I'm looking forward to that as well!

News - Blu-ray Discs Increasing In Capacity To 128GB

This is pretty cool, but I'd imagine a complete showstopper is not being compatible with today's Blu-ray players. Hopefully that will be remedied by the time it hits consumer level.

The new BDXL specification describes High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs which will write up to 128GB of content on each disc. These are write-once capacities, with the rewritable discs allowing for 100GB of storage. For now it's just for commercial usage, but the BDA will be launching consumer BDXL discs, which will be handy for those of us planning on investing in a Blu-ray recorder in the near future.

News - April 6th Blu-ray Releases

EDIT: Continuing from last week, I am noting the Warner Brothers titles which will have the 30-day rental window imposed on them by placing ** next to the title.

Not a lot of new titles this week, but I imagine all us geeks should be giddy about the Battlestar Galactica complete series being released on Blu-ray. Since I never got into that, this week is a bit less exciting for me, but still I think we've all been waiting for the following for quite a while. Seriously though, outside of those two, I had trouble even thinking of a comment on the others.

MissingRemote's Pick of the Week

I can't wait to see how these titles look in Blu-ray, considering how great they looked on DVD. The movies are really ideal for the format, with lots of action scenes, special effects and just all around great movies.

For the second week in a row however, my pick of the week is a Warner Brothers movie...yet oddly enough Netflix.com shows it available today...so maybe this rule is just for new news releases?

News - 1st quarter Blu-ray sales up 68 percent over last year

Interesting stat here, as DVD continues to be a dominating force, although no surprise that Blu-ray continues to climb.

it's still interesting to note that for the 1st quarter fo 2010, sales were up 68.5 percent over the same quarter last year. Overall packaged media was up 3.1 percent, which isn't saying that much since overall sales were hit pretty hard last year.

News - March 30th Blu-ray Releases

EDIT: Beginning this week, I will start noting the Warner Brothers titles which will have the 30-day rental window imposed on them. I will place ** next to the title.

I can't remember a week with fewer overall selections of Blu-ray titles, but there are always at least one winner. I did have the unfortunate luck of watching "Housebroken" with Danny DeVito...and it really tops my list of worst movies of the year. Seriously, it was awful. I can't believe I haven't seen "The Killer" featuring a very young Chow Yung Fat, so that's on my list to check out. Luckily, there were more than that released...

MissingRemote's Pick of the Week

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this revision to the classic series. I have read some reviews saying it was too far off from the traditional movies, and that they made Holmes out to be way to strong a character, but I was thoroughly entertained throughout. The twists weren't all that great, but I enjoyed the banter between Downey and Law and the explosions were fun as well. This is not an oscar-caliber film, but that's not what it was going for either, it was just a good time!

News - Cameron Says ‘Avatar’ DVD, Blu-ray Will Not Have ‘Crap’

Now this is refreshing to hear. Then again, it's slightly annoying that the initial version is going to released without any bonus features--there will be a code in the movie to access bonus features online, but still, for the price of movies these should be included even if it requires additional discs IMO.

{joomsay link=http://www.homemediamagazine.com/product-news/cameron-says-avatar-dvd-blu-ray-will-not-have-crap-18842 [HomeMediaMag]}In addition to those pesky trailers between fans and the start of the film, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will include only the film and no bonus features on both the initial DVD and Blu-ray releases. Cameron said the releases, especially the Blu-ray, lack bonuses in order to utilize all of the discs’ bitrate for the film’s picture and sound.{/joomsay}
