MCE remote won't reset or program

I have a MS MCE remote that I started to use again (after period of inactivity). It is programmed currently to control the audio of a Logitech speaker system and power of a Syntax TV. So now I need to re-program it to control the volume of the same Syntax TV as opposed to the Logitech speakers. But I cannot seem to get it to program or to reset to defaults. I follow the instructions for both without luck. When programming it, it seems to take but won't control the TV. When I try reset, it gives 4 flashes (indicating the reset did not take).
For troubleshooting I tried the following:
-Try daylight/lowlight/bright light
-Try in a closet to avoid interference
-remove batteries for 3 days and then try again
-replace batteries
-google search

I'm out of ideas - the remote works fine otherwise. Any ideas/opinions?

Try This:

To restore the default remote control settings
1 Press and hold the DVD MENU button and LEFT navigation button at the same time until the remote control for Media Center PC lights turn off.

2 Press the OK button.

The remote control for Media Center PC lights blink twice to confirm that the buttons have been reset. The TV button will have no command assigned to it and the VOL + and VOL – buttons will adjust the Media Center PC system volume. If the default settings were not restored, the lights blink quickly four times. To try again, repeat steps 1 and 2.

Thanks - but this is exactly what I am doing - without success. The light blinks 4 times to indicate the reset failed. I followed the manual to a T.

I could swear I had to short it out by removing the batteries and touching a paper clip to a couple contacts.

Stop swearing and tell me how you shorted it  ;D

I meant the battery contacts. Kinda like pressing the bower button on the pc after you disconnect the PSU to discharge the capacitors. I always see a quick spin of the fan when I do that.

Here's a picture of the remote in two pieces (so you can see which battery contacts to "short").  The contacts to the "front" are the only ones attached to the PCB - those are the ones you want.

Like they said, use a paperclip (anything conductive and long enough to touch both contacts at the same time), hold it on those two front contacts for a little while to drain the electricity (and remove the remotes "memory")  Then see if it'll re-program.

That being said, they're not known as the finest electronic devices on the planet...  Ours have held up well over the years - BUT - YMMV...

Dude...  How old IS this FusionHDTV3 ???

I use mine as a backup for when my Logitech is recharging or when I am outside and keep it in my cargo pocket to change the music.

Piece of crap just won't comply. Tried to short it several times but no luck...

I usually leave it shorted for ~30 minutes to get it to come back to life.

I think it is ready for the trash - I tried it shorted for a couple of hours and still nothing.

Thanks for all the input!
