Harmony Question

Thinking of pulling the trigger on a 520 or maybe a 720 off eBay, but would like to know two things.

1.  How well do they work with htpc?

2.  Do the remotes "know" if your components are already on?  That is, when I execute an activity, does the remote turn the TV off if it was already on, or does it know that the step doesn't need to be taken?

1) They work fine with HTPCs. You'll probably need to be more specific if you have a specific concern about usability Smile

2) Yes, Harmony remotes remember the state of each device. This includes both on/off, and which audio/video inputs are selected.

Thank you!  As far as working with the htpc, I want it to be able to wake the htpc from sleep, put it back to sleep, use it in media center, and maybe map a couple of buttons to specific windows functions (pull up start menu, etc.)

not sure about the mapping specific buttons like Pulling up the Start menu, but everything else they can do just fine Smile

might need an app like Girder to do some crazy stuff like start menu...not sure

A lot of the menus in media center have specific commands and they show up in the drop down list when setting up the remote. I know for a fact My pictures, videos, radio, music, maim menu and recorded tv have specific commands. As does guide, power and there are mappings for the 4 colored buttons that come with controllers. The one thing I wish Logitech would do is allow every single key on a keyboard to be mapped. And perhaps put a directional pad on the remote to use as a mouse.

Doh. You mean the main start menu and not the Green Button start menu. I think you could do it with Girder but that app is confusing. There is another app out there also but it is equally confusing. You might find a user made script to load the commands though.

Mapping IR signals to keyboard presses is easy with EventGhost and free.
