Blog: I joined the MP3 revolution with a 30GB iPod video

The iPod 30GB is a nice little device for when you are traveling. My issue with it is that I only get about 2 hours of battery life when watching tv/movie which can be a rough limitation when spending the day on a plane. I've heard the new ones may have better battery life, so if you have any experience with that would appreciate to hear it.

I've been using a third party app to convert some tv shows over to an ipod friendly format, but it doesn't handle 16x9 content well....it all gets squished into a 4x3 box. Do any of the convertors you used handle 16x9 HD content properly?

Good question I haven't really done a lot of video yet. The battery life for playing audio is quite good. And I belive the 5.5G iPod Video's have an improved battery life when playing video.

Another excellent question, I haven't tried any widescreen stuff yet, I'll have to mess with some. What apps have you used for conversion?

I think it's called SagetoIpod...it was custom written for Sage and I don't know what compression app it's based off of. It's possible it's just a profile issue, but there aren't a lot of things you can customize in it.

I get about 4-5 hours of video playback on the 80 GB model.

I used the "Free iPod Video Converter" (http://www.jodix.com) on several Stargate SG1 episodes, and it preserved the 16:9 ratio.

I've got a black 8 gig Nano; despite it being the third iPod I've ever bought it was my first. My brother and I first bought a 1G Shuffle for Little Sis (my brother owns a 30 gig iPod) and then for Christmas I bought my friend a 4 gig Nano (Pink cause she's a girl and just had to have it in pink). The Shuffle started breaking down so I bought another pink 4 gig Nano for Little Sis (see note on girls and pink above).

I bought my Nano off of a guy at work, he was looking to sell and I was looking to buy. If it hadn't happened like that I think I might have picked up a 4 gig for myself.

Probably in pink, just cause. Smile

I love my little black Nano. Its very much something I have to take with me everywhere. Every now and then I think I should have just gone with the 30 gig iPod but I perfer the smaller form factor of the Nano and I don't really miss the video playback function at all.

I have the first iteration of the fifth generation ipod video (30 gb). It honestly rocks my world. Being able to listen on the bus / in my car and watching videos when i'm really bored or am on an airplane is awesome. I use videora ipod convertor and have had good luck with that. I really wish apple would support avi compressed with divX or xvid so i didn't have to convert all my heroes episodes from bittorrent. I find iTunes to be nice and simple to use and simple to sync to the ipod though a tad on the hefty side for memory usage and space for the program though.

I wish the screen would be larger for videos but then again the ipods main purpose is an mp3 player and the small form factor is nice. I wonder if apple will release a true video ipod anytime soon.
