News - MCE 7 Reset Toolbox Version 3 Released

Another great tool for Windows 7 Media Center has been released. This time MCE 7 Reset Toolbox. This tool is the "Swiss army knife" of Media Center. MCE 7 Reset Toolbox allows you to perform everything from full backups, themes, channel editing, and any other full customizations you would ever want to do to Media Center.

I personally don't have any experience with this tool, in fact this is the first time I have heard of the tool, but from what I can see it looks like a great tool and just might be my next piece of software I install on my HTPC.

Version 3 of MCE 7 Rest Toolbox has been released. If you have purchased the addin you should get notified about the update when you run the application.

You can download a trial version of the app from MadeforMediaCenter.com

News - Ceton Diagnostic Media Center Plugin Beta Release

Back in February Josh Pollard from The Digital Media Zone had created a simple diagnostics Ceton Cable Card tool for Media Center. Now fast forward today and Ceton has now released their official diagnostics tool. While the tool is still in beta form, it still allows for full visibility into the tuner, its settings, health, signal, you name it.

The utility which is a native 7MC plugin, allows for full access into those of you who are running the Ceton cable card tuner. The great thing about utilities like these is you no longer have to run and find your keyboard and mouse to load up the web browser diagnostics tool. It is now all within the Media Center UI.

Ceton, makers of the fantastic InfiniTV 4 and InfiniTV 4 USB, have released a new Windows Media Center plugin that allows you to view diagnostic data from their tuners right from within Media Center. If you’ve used an InfiniTV 4 tuner then you already know that you can access a website from your Media Center PC to view the full offering of diagnostic information from the tuner, but if you just want to view the tuner temperature, signal strength, or something else, quickly from your couch, then firing up a web browser on the HTPC isn’t the most convenient solution.

News - 7MC library not displaying coverart for recent movies

For those of you who have followed our recent guide on using the native movie library in 7MC, you might have noticed that some of your coverart is missing from movies recorded on live TV. The issue seems to be that the server 7MC was using to download the coverart has changed its url but 7MC is still using the old address. Hopefully MS can provide a fix for the issue.

Movies recorded by Media Center that were made in 2010 or 2011 are not downloading the coverart and are showing as the default Movie image in Media center. It looks like the problem is related to the service that Media Center uses to obtain its cover art from which has changed it’s URL but Windows Media Center is still trying to use its old URL. While its only a minor issue it frustrating if you like to keep your Media Center looking nice.

News - Commercial Break Viewing in Windows Media Center Sneak Peek

Commercial Break Viewer

If you are familiar with SageTV, you probably know that the software can show where commercial breaks are in the video timeline. It looks like this functionality will soon be brought to Windows Media Center courtesy of Mark Terborg and his Recorded TV HD plug-in. It looks awesome!

Notice anything about this MC screen? Coming soon to Recorded TV HD: Commercial Break Viewer. It's kind of a hack and it's not perfect but it works pretty well.

News - TweakMC updated for Windows 7

If you remember the days of TweakMC back in the Vista Media Center era you will remember it was a great utility for customizing Media Center. Enabling the DVD Library which was disabled by default. Fixing overscan issues, you name it, TweakMC did it.

A member over at the Windows Experts Community (formerly The Green Button) has found the original source code for TweakMC, re-complied it and updated it for Windows 7. Head over to the forums and check it out.

Well, I just made TweakMC even better!  I added options under the "TV" menu so you can adjust your fast forward and rewind speeds!  I've attached a file to this post.  The file contains the source code, a batch file for compiling, and it also contains the executable file TweakMC.exe.  You don't even need to buy a compiler!

News - Custom Media Center Experience with Windows Embedded Standard 7

Win7 Embedded has been going around for OEMs for a while now in the hopes that they will leverage the OS for an optimized Media Center experience. What I find ironic about the below video demonstrating this is that Microsoft for so long has refused to support the changing of the interface's look & feel, but now they are going a different route. I'm a fan though!

Windows Embedded Standard 7 allows Connected Media Devices manufacturers to leverage Media Center experience in their next generation of set-top boxes. Windows Embedded provides resources to allow them to customize this experience to make it unique. In this video you will discover what can be done to rebrand the experience, customize Media Center start menu with MCML or Silverlight and add custom applications and strips in the start menu.
