News - TunerFree Becomes a Windows Store App

TunerFreeMCE, a longtime favorite Windows Media Center plugin, has made the leap from WMC to the Windows Store as TunerFree. TunerFree collects on-demand content from a variety of sources, including BBC iPlayer, ITV, Hulu, NASA TV, and BBC Radio. As an American, the only BBC content I could reliably access through TunerFreeMCE was BBC Radio, but part of the beauty of TunerFreeMCE was the ability to select the specific content sources you wanted to include in the interface, a feature that the Windows Store app has brought over. TunerFree is available for free from the Windows Store.

TunerFree

For for a long time TunerFreeMCE has been the best addin for bringing on demand TV into Windows Media Center with out the need for a TV Tuner (hence the name). Martin Millmore the developer of TunerFree has brought the app to the Windows Store, bringing TV to Windows 8 and Windows RT.

News - Media Browser 2.6 (Atlas) Available

Media Browser

I'm going to have to admit right up front that this one slipped past me. I've been a Media Browser user for a couple of years now, but for the last month or so I have been distracted by some special project testing with XBMC and completely missed the release of Media Browser 2.6, codenamed Atlas. It's unfortunate too, because there is a lot to like in this new version, particularly the new system-wide search functionality and the ability to store a local copy of metadata and images which should go long way toward improving responsiveness with large collections when conducting a database refresh.

After over six weeks of testing and lots of major effort by many one of the largest releases of Media Browser to date is now available for download on the download page.

News - Media Browser 2.5.3 (Apollo SP1) Released

Media Browser logo

Media Browser has received a minor update, bringing the popular media management plugin for Windows Media Center to version 2.5.3. The update is focused on bug fixes rather than new features. For instance there is a fix for memory leaks in the Media Browser service and a couple of fixes to ensure that podcasts and TV episodes show up correctly under different circumstances. One neat new feature is the ability to sort by MPAA rating, a feature that I would have really appreciated when my kids were first learning how to run the living room remote control. There are also some changes to how Media Browser plug-ins are stored. As one would expect, the change should occur in the background while transitioning to the new version, but be sure to check out the complete release notes if you get an error.

Version 2.5.3 is now available on the main Download page.

Not much in the way of features in this release but some important bug fixes including:

  • Fix for last added lists containing TV outside of the normal file structure
  • Podcasts now show in last added lists properly

News - My Movies for WHS 2011, Windows 7 Media Center Updated

My Movies LogoMy Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 has been updated to v2.11 Pre-Release 1. The new version of the My Movies backend is adding a number of features along with the usual collection of fixes. Several of the fixes relate to how My Movies for WHS 2011 handles converted files. Of particular interest is the new backend support for downloading converted movies to mobile devices. My Movies updates tend to come in groups, and sure enough a quick visit to the My Movies website reveals that My Movies for Windows 7 Media Center and Collection Management have also received a pre-release update to version 4.03. Again there is a new set of feature additions and big fixes, including some love for the cutting edge among us with support added for PowerDVD 12 as an external player and a bug fix related to installing on Windows 8. There are few things in the tech world more exciting than running pre-release software on a pre-release operating system.

My Movies for Windows Home Server provides automated disc copying of Audio CD’s and movies from internal or USB attached optical drives, adding meta-data to copied discs, or movies and TV programmes  already stored on the server by monitoring your shared folders.

News - Media Browser 2.5.2 (Apollo) Released

Media Browser

Version 2.5.2 of Media Browser, codenamed Apollo, has been released. In addition to the usual raft of performance improvements, there are a number of big changes to version 2.5.2 that every Media Browser user should be aware of. First up, this version Media Browser requires Windows 7. Windows Vista is no longer supported. Also, Media Browser is getting its own metadata xml file called movie.xml. According to the release notes, Apollo is still backward compatible with mymovies.xml, but the developers are recommending that users make the change as quickly as possible and have several links to information to assist in making the transition. Finally, the other big addition is that Media Browser is now able to recognize 3D movies so long as they follow proper naming conventions. I know what I will be playing with tonight. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing the improvements to the default theme in action.

Version 2.5.2 (Apollo) is now available for download. This version started out as a quick maintenance release but evolved into a new version that should provide significant performance and feature improvements in several areas.

Please see the changelog for a complete description of the changes and new features.

News - Quick Guide to Fix Access to YouTube with MacroTube

Accessing streaming media from within the Windows Media Center interface has always been an issue; an issue that Microsoft never really stepped up to resolve, leaving WMC users to rely on the goodwill of community developers to devise solutions for accessing services such as YouTube. One of the more promising projects to come along in that vein was MacroTube. Unfortunately, though MacroTube was greeted quite warmly by the WMC community, it has not been under active development for some time and MacroTube's ability to access its included providers has degraded over time as services have gone away and changed their backend connection information. Our friends at The Digital Lifestyle have put together a quick guide showing how to get MacroTube back on its feet and accessing YouTube and YouTube HD, the feeds that people were most excited about with MacroTube. TDL's guide is based on the work of a small group of fans who started a Google Project devoted to fixing MacroTube's provider access. If you are interested in delving a bit deeper into adding more providers to MacroTube, this would probably be a good place to start.

News - Shared Guide Potato Updated to Version 1.1.7

Shared Guide Potato

I had not heard of Shared Guide Potato until just recently, but if you are still pining for the ill-fated Softsled, then this one is for you. Shared Guide Potato pulls double duty as a plugin for both Remote Potato and Windows Media Center. Remote Potato is a favorite around these parts. If you're not familiar with it, Remote Potato provides remote access to your WMC via your browser or mobile app to stream content, browse the EPG, and even schedule and manage your recordings. Shared Guide Potato is a plugin for WMC that adds a shared guide to WMC that talks to Remote Potato running on another machine. This allows you to use Remote Potato through the Media Center interface, scheduling and recording TV on one central computer. It is not a complete Softsled-style solution because you still need a local tuner for live TV, but it might be as close as we ever get.

Shared Guide Potato was recently updated to version 1.1.7 after a flurry of updates from developer Mark Meyer. The most recent updates have added the ability to change the channel on a remote machine through the shared guide and an advanced recording option for scheduling programs before they appear on the EPG.

I have developed a media center addin for remote potato. This allows you to access your guide from a remote pc. The benefit of this is you can have one central recording box and view the guide and scheduled recordings on other pc's. It's a step towards softsled.

News - Tweak Mediabrowser to Share Playstates Only

Mediabrowser coverflow

By default, Mediabrowser runs largely as a local application. It's easy to set up the program with the media libraries pointed at any location, local or networked, but all of the playstate and settings information is stored locally. Mediabrowser has long been easy to tweak to share the playstates and display view settings by moving certain files to a network location and adjusting a configuration file, but it's always been necessary to move the two together. I've never actually done this because I didn't want to tie the entire household's display view settings to the whims of my fickle kids' installations, but with the help of a little smbolic linking it would appear that it is surprisingly easy to allow my kids to resume their Winnie the Pooh in their rooms without being saddled with their coverflow view in the living room.

Basically, it allows you to place your playstate directory (for maintaining watched status and resume points) and display.db file (which holds your view configurations) within a share and then use the <UserSettingsPath /> element to set the path to that shared location.  It works well, but I prefer not to lock my views to a single setting between multiple HTPCs.  I just want to preserve my watched status and resume points.

News - Media Browser to Change Metadata files to Movie.xml

Media Browser will be changing their metadata XML file name to movie.xml with the next release, codenamed Apollo. The change comes in response to a change made by My Movies in their most recent release. I hadn't noticed the change in the My Movies version 4.02 release notes, but the My Movies team has decided to start encrypting their own mymovies.xml metadata file. Encrypting the mymovies.xml file makes sense given that the My Movies metadata service is an increasingly valuable part of the My Movies package, but Media Browser has also used the mymovies.xml file for metadata, which means that folks who use My Movies Collection Management for their metadata backend and Media Browser for their frontend are now out of luck. The XML change in Media Browser won't necessarily fix the problem for those folks, but will establish Media Browser's metadata file as its own entity to avoid future confusion.

So, for those of you that preferred the Media Browser Media Center front end and the MyMovies metadata managing capabilities on the backend, your days are now officially over if you have upgraded to the version implementing this change.  All your mymovies.xml files are now encrypted and unreadable by Media Browser.

News - My Movies for WMC, WHS and My Movies Collection Management Updated

Brian Binnerup and his team have released a round of updates for the primary My Movies applications. My Movies for Windows Media Center and My Movies Collection Management have both received a Pre-Release 8 update for version 4.02. Meanwhile, My Movies for Windows Home Server 2011 also gets a Pre-Release 8 boost for version 2.10. None of these updates are final releases, but they all come with a couple of new and updated features as well as a host of bug fixes. Be sure to check the changelogs if you want to see everything in the updates and do keep in mind that this is beta software.

Added: Option to mark a disc as being a bonus disc. This is to be used for TV Series mapping instructions and for future option of displaying bonus discs in Windows Media Center.

Change: DVD Profiler import changed to new online import option. This deprecates the option to import just data.
