News - Vizio Co-Star Reviewed

Just when it was beginning to look like the second wave of Google TV was going to fizzle out before we could even get to the holiday shopping season due to a lack of new hardware, along came Vizio with the Google TV-powered Co-Star to rekindle interest in the platform. Vizio has taken the unusual move of only offering the $100 Co-Star online through their website, rather than taking advantage of their usual 1-2 retail power punch of Costco and Walmart, which might be part of the reason that reviews have been slow to trickle out. Fortunately, our friends at GigaOM not only put the Co-Star through its paces, but did so for an episode of Cord Cutters, so not only can we learn their opinion of Vizio's first take on Google TV, but we get to see it in action as well.

Vizio Co-Star

Vizio’s Co-Star is the company’s first Google TV device. How does it stack up to Roku, Apple TV and other media streamers, and how well does it work for cord cutters? Check out our video review for a detailed look at the device.

News - Pre-Orders for Vizio Co-Star Begin at $100

Vizio Co-Star

Vizio's next-gen Google TV set top box, the Co-Star, may be the most highly anticipated Google TV device to date, especially given its competitive feature set and price point. Next gen Google TV devices have been slow coming to the market, but the Vizio Co-Star is nearly here. Vizio is taking pre-orders for the Co-Star on their website for up to two units with an expected ship date of August 14. I've gone on record as being less than enthusiastic about Google TV, but the Co-Star may be the first device to spark a serious interest in giving Google's take on the future of TV a shake since the Logitech Revue went on fire sale, especially with its included support for OnLive's game streaming service.

With the buzz around the VAP430 having been maintained right through the first half of the year, the time has now come to officially open the pre-orders. The unit will initially be available for order through Vizio's own online store starting today. The cost of the unit is $99.99 with free ground shipping while supplies last.

News - Vizio Announces Google TV-Powered Co-Star

Vizio Co-Star

Vizio recently announced the Co-Star. The Co-Star, previously known as the VAP430, is Vizio's take on Google TV. Like all Google TV set top boxes, the Co-Star is intended to sit between your cable or satellite box and your TV. It sounds like Vizio has gone to some length to create a fresh, clean overlay UI and is looking to differentiate their offering with the inclusion of support for the OnLive cloud gaming service and a $99 price tag, half that of the NSZ GS7 that Sony announced earlier this week. The Co-Star does not come with a wireless OnLive controller, but it does come with a Bluetooth remote control that can offer gaming support in a pinch and also integrates IR blaster capabilities. Coming in at such an attractive price point, the Co-Star may well be the sort of device to spur renewed interest in Google TV.

The device itself offers support for 1080p video over HDMI, 802.11n wireless, Ethernet, a USB port for storage and peripherals, and ships with a Bluetooth remote that has a touchpad, full QWERTY keyboard with gaming buttons on its reverse side, and direct launch buttons for Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and M-Go.

News - Year-Over-Year LCD TV Shipments Fall for First Time, Samsung and Vizio Hold Top Spots

Samsung's decision to spin of their LCD unit into a separate company earlier this year was prompted by falling panel prices amid a worldwide component glut. The problem wasn't just the abundance of manufacturers pumping out lower quality, inexpensive panels, but falling demand for LCD TVs. That falling demand became even more evident in a recent NPD DisplaySearch report that showed LCD HDTV sales fell year-over-year for the first time ever. The market shrunk by a bit less than 3% from 2011 to 2012, and the market shrinkage seems to be accelerating with a drop of 8% in the first quarter of 2012. Samsung and Vizio were able to make lemonade out of the lemons that NPD was handing out thanks to another report from iSupply that showed Samsung holding onto its top spot as the global sales leader and Vizio leading specifically in the U.S. market. With margins and sales continuing to drop, it will be interesting to see at what point maintaining those sales leads actually become a drag on their bottom lines.

Global TV shipments fell by eight percent in the first quarter of 2012 and, compounding the bad news, total LCD shipments fell for the first time, by 2.53 percent. This time last year, total TV shipments had grown by one percent and LCD by eight percent.

News - Vizio Adds Skype and YouTube to Internet Apps

Vizio's Internet Apps smart TV platform added two new apps this week. The first was a new Skype app. To take advantage of the Skype app, Vizio is also selling the new V.I.A. TV Video Camera for $150. The TV Video Camera connects to a compatible V.I.A-enabled TV via USB and provides 720p video capability. The second new app is a YouTube app, giving Vizio TV owners yet another way to stream video from the Internet. The YouTube app looks like a fairly basic variant with YouTube Channel browsing and account login for saved playlists and channel favorites.

Vizio and Skype

Not long after bringing some Redmond vid-calling to your living room, Vizio's introducing another app that may just enhance your couch entertainment. Via its Twitter account, the outfit announced YouTube will now be a part of its Internet App portfolio.

News - Google TV Adds an LG TV to the Portfolio

Google tried to keep Google TV out of sight during last year's CES, but not his year. Hot on the heels of Marvell's announcement that it was building chips to support Google TV's transition to ARM comes the announcement that LG will be showing off their own Google TV-powered smart TV at CES this year. LG will be joining Samsung, Sony, and Vizio who had already announced that they would be offering Google TV products. LG's Google TV offering will allow users to switch between the standard Google TV UI and a custom UI that LG has put together, presumably using their LG Magic Remote QWERTY. Similar to the Magic Remote that LG announced recently with voice and motion control, the LG Google TV version will include a QWERTY keyboard for text input. It should be noted that LG is not planning on using the freshly announced Marvell chips for their Google TV products. LG will be using their own L9 SoC, which is presumably the first fruits of the ARM license that LG picked up earlier this year.

LG Google TV

The second round of Google TV hardware will be in full swing at CES 2012, and the folks at Mountain View just officially announced LG is joining the list of hardware partners at the show. While we know Logitech was taking a pass on the latest hardware, previously announced partners Samsung, Sony and Vizio are still in and the latter two will have new hardware to show next week.

News - Vizio Launches M-Series Passive 3D TVs

Vizio has a nasty habit of releasing surprisingly good televisions at a given price point and they are hoping to do it again with their new M-Series line of TVs. The Vizio M-Series TVs are edge-lit LED LCD TVs, but their most intriguing feature is their passive Theater 3D technology. Vizio is promising that Theater 3D will produce flicker and artifact-free 3D, and the glasses should even be good to use in theaters using ReadlD 3D. Popular Science certainly likes what they have seen of Theater 3D. Anyone else interested in giving Vizio's passive 3D solution a try?

Last CES Vizio announced a slew of new LCD HDTVs with its passive glasses-compatible Theater 3D capabilities and Vizio Internet Apps built in, and now it's finally ready to announced the M-series midrange lineup is shipping nationwide.
