Review - Lian Li PC-90 HPTX Chassis

Whether you are building a gaming rig, a general purpose desktop, a home server, or even a home theater PC (HTPC), the case you choose will vary greatly depending on your personal needs and taste. Recently, I was given the opportunity to review the Lian Li PC-90 full tower desktop case. While this may not be the HTPC case for many, it has some unique qualities about it that make it a compelling choice for housing a full size HTPC or Windows Home Server.
Over the years, Lian Li has produced some of the most sleek, modern, high-quality computer cases I have seen to date, and the Lian Li lives up to all the previous builds and then some. One of the great things about the Lian Li PC-90 is its compact form factor that still allows for a full MTX, or even larger HPTX motherboards, while not sacrificing a large, over-sized case.

Review - Netgear Universal WiFi Range Extender WN3000RP

In the last 5 - 10 years wireless has vastly changed how we connect devices to the internet in our homes. Every smartphone, laptop, tablet, media streamer, gaming console has the ability to connect to your network through your wireless access point. Along with the ability to no longer having to run an Ethernet cord everywhere you needed network connectivity, there were short comes. As almost everyone can attest to wireless is not 100% perfect, there is always a corner of your home, or an area in your back yard that your wireless can not reach.

That is where wireless repeaters or "range extenders" come into play, they allow you to extend your wireless coverage to distances greater than your access point at home can do on it's own. Lately the trend from many consumer network manufactures is bringing to market these range extenders. Today we were able to review one of the new 802.11N range extenders from Netgear, the Netgear Universal WiFi Range Extender WN3000RP.

The Netgear range extender as we get into later on in the review, allows users to bridge the gap between where your wireless network starts to fall apart and where you would like to use your wireless devices but can not.

Review - My Movies 4.0

Long time readers of MissingRemote will remember a popular review we did in 2009 where some of the top Windows Media Center movie plugins are pitted against each other, and how My Movies 3.0 emerged as my personal favorite. My Movies has always been a movie management system which unlike some plugins, includes a fully user manageable server with a database backend and a very customizable frontend. My Movies 4 is a full new version number but the changes aren't as comprehensive as its predecessor. Now included is extensive TV episode and series support, as well as a slightly modified database interface which aims to bring My Movies into the forefront of two of the main types of Media Management users--TV and movies.MyMovies 4.0

What is it?

My Movies 4.0 is an all-inclusive movie manager and frontend (interface) for Windows Vista and Windows 7 Media Center users. If you are not a Media Center user you can still leverage the extensive movie database backend to manage your collection as the application will make universally recognizable files for other applications and devices such as XBMC, HDI Dune and Popcorn Hour, to name a few. The application was created by Brian Binnerup back in 2004 due to the lack of a native Windows' default Movie Library  in Media Center. Over the years My Movies has built arguably the largest database of movie information and artwork.

Review - QNAP TS-259 Pro+ NAS

QNAP TS-259 Pro+ NASIn the past we have reviewed a number of various NAS boxes from QNAP and have always been pleased with their performance and features. Today we take a closer look at their latest top of the line, the QNAP TS-259 Pro+NAS, and see how it holds up to the competition as well as taking a look at some other models.

SPECIFICATIONS
While its outside appearance is very similar to the previous generation of NAS boxes from QNAP, a closer look at the specs reveals that the system’s internals have been completely overhauled. Remember that when looking at the specs, NAS boxes have a customized OS so they are normally extremely low powered and are optimized purely for network and file I/O.

Review - HDPLEX H10.ODD Fanless Chassis

HDPLEX H10.ODD Fanless ChassisThe H10.ODD is a microATX fanless HTPC-centric chassis brought to use by HDPLEX Inc. If the name HDPLEX (no relation to OSX Media Center Plex) sounds familiar, it should. We helped spread the word a little over a year ago HD Plex Announces Fanless, Heatpipe-cooled All-Aluminum HTPC Enclosures. I was curious then and jumped at the opportunity to review one of the first H10.ODD made available.

In the words of HDPLEX CEO Larry Liu, “We [HDPLEX] set out to create a family of products that look good when combined with high-end A/V equipment, are silent and affordable”. High end and affordable are not words this editor has commonly seen used together and I was intrigued to see whether they succeeded.

Review - QNAP NMP-1000P Media Player

Today we have for review the QNAP NMP-1000P universal media player device. If this sounds and looks familiar, it's because we have previously reviewed its predecessor, the QNAP NMP-1000 which was a very capable media player that could play a wealth of formats. Tim’s main points of argument were the cost and size of the player. While neither of those changed with this revision, there were a couple of items that have changed which make this an even more attractive unit. As you may expect, this NMP-1000P from QNAP is on our Media Player Comparison Guide if you would like to compare with other players on the market. As it is one of the highest end players available, we will look to see if the $400+ retail price is appropriate and worthy of your hard earned dollars.

QNAP NMP-1000P

SPECIFICATIONS

Let’s start out with the most glaring point about the NMP-1000P that’s different than the 1000 version--if you live in the United States, this device is currently not available for sale there. For the purposes of this review, I won’t re-hash what Tim has already done a a wonderful job on in May of this year in his review of the NMP-1000P. Instead I will focus on what makes this version different and how it matches up.

Here are the detailed specs from QNAP NMP-1000P:

Review - Western Digital AV-GP 2 TB Hard Disk Drive

Western-Digital-AV-GPOver the years there has always been one constant when it comes to digital media consumption--hard drives, an essential necessity in the world of digital entertainment. If it wasn’t for a hard drive we would not have digital video recorders, computers and in our niche of the world, home theater computers. It seems like yesterday when I got my first computer which came with a whopping 40MB hard drive that was three times the size of todays standard hard drives. My how the times have changed. Now my HTPC runs 4 terabytes (TB) of storage space for recording TV shows and my WHS machine has over 10TB of storage. In the latest of a long line of hard drives from Western Digital comes their AV-GP line of hard drives. Courtesy of HDStor, Inc the 2TB AV-GP is an audio-video optimized version of their WD Caviar Green hard disk drive line. With specialized firmware this drive is optimized for recording and storing audio and video. This review will dive into just how well this hard drive performs, and if it does what it says it will do.
