News - 2.1 M Streamed Superbowl

Just like its TV counterpart the online version of this years Superbowl set records for viewership with 2.1 million unique views. This figure makes this years Superbowl the most-watched single-game sporting event online besting totals for previous events such as the 2010 world cup, 2010 Olympics and the Annual NCAA basketball tournament. While this was a great turnout it is still a small fraction (1.88%) of the record 111.3 million viewers who chose more traditional channels to view the big game. These figures would seem to suggest that even when provided the option to watch it online viewers still prefer to watch sports the old fashioned way.

NEW YORK -- The first live stream of the Super Bowl drew 2.1 million unique viewers, NBC said Thursday.

That's a small fraction of the record 111.3 million viewers that watched NBC's broadcast of the big game. But it was still enough to make it the most-watched single-game sports event online, according to the network.

So missingremote which way did you choose to watch the big game?

News - CES Hands On With Tivo Netflix and YouTube updates

At CES this week Tivo was demoing their updated interfaced for Netflix and YouTube online streaming services running on the Tivo Premier. The new interfaces include updated search functionality, the ability to add movies to your queue, and even included 5.1 audio.

Tivo was also demoing a new companion box, yet to be named, that when paired with the Tivo Premier enables streaming live and recorded tv to your iOS devices. The setup also included an feature to download to be watched later.

While there is no confirmed dates or prices on the new companion box Tivo did say the updated streaming interfaces would be pushed out some time this spring. Head over to Engadget for a full gallery of the hands on with Tivo.

Like us, you're probably wondering what's new with TiVo at CES. Typically the company doesn't issue press releases during CES, or even announce new products, but private meetings are held in TiVo's meeting space. In said space, we were able to take in demos of the latest Netflix and YouTube interfaces running on the TiVo Premiere. The refreshed look is greatly appreciated, as in the ability to search and even add movies to your Netflix queue -- there is even support for 5.1 surround sound. Both interfaces should look familiar if you've ever seen the Insignia cTV with TiVo design. The demo was an early version, but we're told the updates should be hitting your Tivo this spring.

News - Netflix App hits PlayStation 3 in the UK

For those "across the pond" readers in the UK and France, the long awaited Netflix App for the PS3 has been released. The downside? Netflix service is still not available. No word on when the service will be available, however head over and get the update to get your PS3 ready for when it hits.

Netflix still isn't offering a firm date for its launch in the UK, but it looks like some of the final pieces are starting to fall into place. The company's PlayStation 3 app is now hitting consoles across the pond, displaying the message you see above when it's launched. Unfortunately, that's about all we have to go on at the moment, but PS3 users can now at least rest assured that they won't have any waiting to do when Netflix does finally flip the switch -- one more shot after the break.

News - Google TV switching to ARM Platform

While most won't care, and some will even say why bother, Google TV is moving away from the x86 platform and migrating towards the ARM processing platform. As part of that move Marvell has been selected as the processor of choice with its Armada 1500 dual core processor as the new heart of the Google TV platform.

The Armada 1500 dual core system will get you 3D BD hardware acceleration, Video encoding and decoding, all while using very little power. While this all sounds great without real world bench mark testing, only time will tell if this is a good move or not.

After all the rumors including word that Intel was backing away from its Atom CE4100 CPU it's finally official: Google TV is moving from x86 to ARM, and Marvell is letting everyone know its Foresight platform has been selected to power the next generation of Google TV hardware. The Armada 1500 dual-core CPU at its heart promises PC-like performance with cellphone-like power management and support for Blu-ray 3D, video encoding / decoding and upscaling. enabling fanless smart TV products built on the package like this demo box seen above. Marvell Co-founder Weili Dai considers this as an opportunity to fundamentally change the relationship between content producers and consumers, a lofty goal for the second round of products after a lackluster market response to the initial effort.

News - Netflix Set to "Air" it's Original Programming Feb 6th

Netflix has slowly been acquiring exclusive content to stream via its online service which is to begin next month. On February 6th Netflix will make available its first original production, Lilyhammer. Netflix has also commissioned a new series called House of Cards, and a new season of Arrested Development.

While I don't subscribe to Netflix myself (Lack of true HD quality, and 5.1 audio) this is a good sign of things to come. Once studios realize they can distribute content directly and bypass conventional mediums we just might start to see content the way we want it.

While Netflix has already announced original productions like House of Cards and a new season ofArrested Development it has commissioned for its streaming video service, the first to debut will beLilyhammer next month. Starring Steve Van Zandt of the E Street Band and The Sopranos, it follows a mobster in witness protection who moves to Lillehammer, Norway, chasing dreams of clean air and gorgeous women. Naturally, it doesn't quite work out like that, but in an interesting twist Netflix will let you find out how it does work out all in one shot. Unlike most linear channels, and even Hulu's original programming efforts like The Confession, Netflix will post the entire season all at once (and in all of its territories -- US, Canada and Latin America) just like it does with older material.

News - Firecore's aTV Flash out of Beta

Firecore the developers that brought you the ability to update your Apple TV with customized firmware and the ability to play a plethora of media files such as MKV, AVI, MP4 and even ISO has recently move out of Beta. Now that the development is out of Beta Firecore is charging a $30 premium for the software.

On top of the added file playback features, the new aTV Flash includes the ability to steam your media from any file server without the need to run iTunes. Also included is an HTML 5 browser, Last.FM support, and a Plex client.

We're definitely of the opinion that the dedicated devs who do all the heavy lifting so you can tweak and hack your pile of gadgets deserve a little something for their troubles. That being said, Firecore's aTV Flash (black) is still going to be a tough sell at $30 (now that it's left beta). But, before you go, perhaps you'd like to know what that chunk of cash will enable your 2nd-gen Apple TV to do. For one, it blesses Cupertino's hobby set-top with an all new media player that can open AVI, MKV, MP4, ISO and host of other file formats. There's also an HTML5 browser for surfing the web and streaming media. Want more apps? How about a Plex client and Last.FM radio? Perhaps best of all, though, it allows you to play back files stored on a PC, Mac or NAS without the need for iTunes. Check out the video demo after the break.

News - HBO GO now Available for Roku

Earlier this month Roku and HBO had released news that the HBO Go service was coming to the Roku network streaming platform. Today it is now available. So if you have a Roku device and have access to the HBO Go service give it a Go (pun intended) and leave some feedback and let us know how it goes.

Less than a month after Roku announced HBO GO was headed to their set-top streamers… the service has arrived. And, at first blush, it looks to offer the same level of programming as found on HBO’s mobile apps — both original HBO programming, like Boardwalk Empire, and a selection of full length movies. I’ll dig in a bit deeper over the next few days, breaking down the content and evaluating the picture quality.

News - First 7.1 Surround Sound Mix Available Via Online Streaming

One of the biggest reasons I am not a fan of many only streaming services is the lack of true surround sound, and high quality, high bit rate video. While I still subscribe to Netflix merely for the convenience factor for my kids, I honestly hardly ever use the service to watch movies myself.

Earlier this week Dolby Laboratories and Vudu started streaming Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with a Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 audio track the first ever movie available with true 7.1 audio streaming over the internet. This is some great news and hopefully signs that things are changing and we soon will see everything streaming in at least 5.1 audio.

Dolby Laboratories, Inc., just enabled the first 7.1-channel surround sound entertainment experience available to streaming media using Dolby Digital Plus audio. VUDU's video-on-demand movie service began streaming Walt Disney Pictures' Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 audio. To date, more than 30 films have been mixed in 7.1 for theatrical release. Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 allows content providers to enable these amazing 7.1 surround sound mixes created for the movie theater to be experienced in the home via streamed media.
