News - Google TV switching to ARM Platform

While most won't care, and some will even say why bother, Google TV is moving away from the x86 platform and migrating towards the ARM processing platform. As part of that move Marvell has been selected as the processor of choice with its Armada 1500 dual core processor as the new heart of the Google TV platform.

The Armada 1500 dual core system will get you 3D BD hardware acceleration, Video encoding and decoding, all while using very little power. While this all sounds great without real world bench mark testing, only time will tell if this is a good move or not.

After all the rumors including word that Intel was backing away from its Atom CE4100 CPU it's finally official: Google TV is moving from x86 to ARM, and Marvell is letting everyone know its Foresight platform has been selected to power the next generation of Google TV hardware. The Armada 1500 dual-core CPU at its heart promises PC-like performance with cellphone-like power management and support for Blu-ray 3D, video encoding / decoding and upscaling. enabling fanless smart TV products built on the package like this demo box seen above. Marvell Co-founder Weili Dai considers this as an opportunity to fundamentally change the relationship between content producers and consumers, a lofty goal for the second round of products after a lackluster market response to the initial effort.

News - Intel Launches Sandy Bridge-E CPU and X79 Chipset

Those crazy engineers over at Intel are at it again. They have officially launched the followup to Sandy Bridge, the Sandy Bridge-E, along with the new X79 chipset to support it. Sandy Bridge-E looks set to bring some nice performance increases, at least at the high end. Of course, these new Sandy Bridge-E processors aren't likely to make their way into the average person's HTPC in the immediate future. That's what Ivy Bridge will be for. Platform launches are always exciting, even when the codename isn't, and even though Sandy Bridge-E is intended for enthusiast and enterprise users it is only a matter of time before some of its more interesting features such as the quad-channel memory controller and PCIe 3.0 support work they way down to the mainstream.

For the LGA2011 platform, Intel is introducing three new chips: The top-end Core 7-3960X at $990—yup, that’s $9 cheaper than the existing Core i7-990X chip (gee thanks, Intel!) that this Extreme chip is meant to replace. Intel is also introducing two other chips. The mid-tier 3.2GHz Core i7-3930K will sell for $555. Besides the lower stock clock, the chip will shed some of the L3 cache, for a total of 12MB. For the budget enthusiast, Intel has plans to release a quad-core, Hyper-Threaded Sandy Bridge-E with 10MB of L3 cache early next year.

News - Zotac H67-ITX WiFi H67 Motherboard Review

Here's a nifty little board from the gang at Zotac, full of features including wireless, maybe your next HTPC board?

Image

Today sees us still keeping our focus on small form factor in general but taking a look at a slightly different product, that shares the same market. The Zotac H67-ITX WiFi is still aimed at the HTPC market but differs somewhat in its design compared to the boards we've looked at recently. We say that as instead of having a built-in style processor or APU, we see a conventional socket able to take Intel's 2nd generation of processors which we all know as Sandybridge. Whilst we love the potential behind the i5 2500k and i7 2600k, this board would be better suited with a low-powered i3 CPU leaving it to be a perfect board to sit snuggly in a nice looking HTPC chassis below your Plasma TV.

News - Enermax Aurora Micro Wireless Keyboard

The quest for a great HTPC keyboard is always a challenge, especially with more of us cutting the cord to watch various streaming options which require a keyboard and mouse. Here's one from Enermax that aims to fit the bill. A bit big for my liking, but looks like it does the job. I do like that it has a trackball.

http://xsreviews.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Enermax-Aurora-Wireless-04-350x228.jpg

The Aurora mini is surprisingly fully featured for one that is about 2/3 of the length of an average keyboard. Its got arrow keys, a full size backspace, oversized enter/return, media keys, mouse ball, scroll wheel etc. The only thing missing is the number pad. Enermax saved some space by making the Home, End, Page up/down etc keys as functions of the arrows.

News - Gigabyte A75-D3H 'AMD Llano' board hands-on

AMD's Llano sure looks like it has an awful lot of potential as AMD tries to get back in the game on par with Intel's Sandy Bridge. With Computex ongoing I imagine we'll see and hear a lot more about specifics of this upcoming platform.

Image

Our best guess is that desktop-based Llano is to make an appearance sometime in July 2011. The chip'll amalgamate up to four Phenom II-derived CPU cores and a low-end Radeon HD 5000-series GPU, if reports are to be believed. The natural competitor to Llano is Intel's second-generation Core chips, formerly known by the code-name Sandy Bridge.

News - ECS H67H2-I Mini-ITX Motherboard Review

Here's a mini-ITX motherboard from ECS that costs $129 with a pretty full set of features if you need.

The foremost feature the H67H2-I boasts isn’t just its size. It’s the potential it offers once you add all the necessary aforementioned components. But, there are other worthy features like built- in Bluetooth, SATA 6Gbps, and USB 3.0 ports. It could be just what you need to build that impressive home theater PC.
