News - Hulu Plus: On Demand on the Couch

Let it be known, I think the Hulu model was terrific and should have been sustainable via straight advertising without the need for the Plus cost, but hopefully it will mean even greater options of shows available. So far it's been somewhat odd, as some shows on regular Hulu aren't available on Plus. Kinks?

Take one big screen TV, hook up a Sony PlayStation 3, add a comfy couch and what do you get? My preferred way to enjoy Hulu Plus. The $9.99 Hulu Plus subscription service brings a ton of premium current season and library content to four screens, with the TV being my screen of choice. I’m pleased to announce that today we are releasing a Hulu Plus application for the PlayStation 3. Now Hulu Plus subscribers with PlayStation Plus accounts can access hundreds of shows and thousands of hours of entertainment, streaming on demand in HD right to your TV.

News - Netflix Edges Past Hulu In Total U.S. Traffic

Pretty cool report here and not all that surprising given some changes recently with Hulu along with the increased movie collection of Netflix. Plus the fact that most Netflix viewers will sit for entire movies and shows, where a lot of Hulu viewers use it for clips, and it makes sense.

According to comScore, plain Web traffic in terms of unique individual visitors to Netflix was 20.2 million in June, 2010, just edging past Hulu’s 19.7 million (see chart). The vast majority of Netflix visitors are there to add movies to their mail-in DVD list, but increasingly they are starting to stream them directly as well. Overall traffic has been growing nicely since April, when Netflix streaming became available on the Wii. Traffic is up 15 percent since April (during a time when Hulu traffic has been essentially flat), and 46 percent from last year. On an annual basis, Hulu is still growing much faster, though, with 126 percent growth.

News - A Look Around ESPN's 3D Master Control Room

I think you all know I'm not a huge fan of 3D, but seeing something like this is still pretty cool. Being able to see ANY control room is pretty sweet, let alone the first 3D sports room ever. But okay, as long as I'm "enjoying" the Uruguay-France game on my small laptop screen, maybe I'm jealous of you 3D owners who happen to be at home!
Amazingly enough, the room pictured in the gallery below didn't exist six weeks ago, and in an insanely short period of time ESPN has managed to create a control room that sucks feeds in from all over the world, adds graphics (along with a specialized ESPN 3D "bug"), ensures that everything is aligned properly and then pipes it out to the aforesaid carriers.

News - The Future Of Netflix’s Business Laid Bare — By Netflix

I love these slides from Netflix. Having the confidence to post an internal document that includes competitors and fears is very brave, but they have some good points. 41 Pages, but it's a good read if you have time.

So what are Netflix’s biggest concerns going forward? Hulu and piracy. Hulu, with it’s forthcoming subscription model “could be significant competitive threat for us,” notes one slide. Piracy could also be a major problem as it may become just as bad for video as it was for music, another slide notes. I’d argue that Netflix isn’t helping that by giving up on new release rentals, but it’s hard to argue with their logic about carving out a very specific, catalog-based streaming niche for themselves.

News - How To View DirecTV’s New 3D Channels

I must admit I'm surprised how fast DirecTV has rolled out their 3D. I won't be jumping on this bus, since I'm not a DirecTV subscriber nor have a 3D set, but if you do, here's a good roundup of what you need to get started.

Once you have all the above, you will need to get the latest DirecTV software download.  It is version x3De and will automatically download to your HD DirecTV receiver or DVR. To learn which version you have, go to “System and Test” under “Set Up” on the DirecTV on-screen menu.  According to a DirecTV representative, the new software began downloading on 5/20/10. To date, HD Guru has not received the new version. Note: the legacy H20 and HR20 receivers will take the new software download but as stated above, will not send the 3D signal out of the box, resulting in a blank screen with a notice if you tune to 3D channel.

News - UFC PPV Comes to Roku

Make no mistake about it, this is big news. UFC PPVs are a pretty high traffic deal, and coming from UFC which has been pretty harsh against online streaming of their content finally give their fans (without cable) a legitimate way to view it. Should be interesting to see their numbers.

Later today, Roku will make a UFC channel available to owners of their $99 box. While the highlight is obviously HD pay per view fights ($45ish?), freebie Octagon-related video content will also be available. Additionally, live event archives will be made available to PPV subscribers several days after the fact – which worked out well for my trial of Roku’s UFC service.

News - FCC Allows Blocking of Set-Top Box Outputs

There's just so many things wrong with this, but i'll let you all begin the discussion. It's such a ridiculous argument to justify getting their way. As if this will stop ANY piracy. Once again, legitimate honest consumer loses out.

''We are unsure when the FCC has ever before given private entities the right to disable consumers' products in their homes,'' the Consumer Electronics Association said in a statement. ''The fact that the motion picture studios want to create a new business model does not mean that functioning products should be disabled by them.''

News - Google to Introduce TV Software

I think any time Google gets involved it's for the better of competition. Not sure this will have an effect on the HTPC crowd since it appears more geared for set top boxes, but still it's an intriguing prospect having a giant like them compete with the standard Comcasts of the world.

The technology—designed to open set-top boxes, TVs and other devices to more content from the Internet—is attracting interest from partners that include Sony Corp., Intel Corp. and Logitech International SA, which are expected to offer products that support the software, these people said. None have so far discussed the efforts publicly.

News - All About the FCC's AllVid..the CableCard Replacement...Potentially

I'm not sure how to take this news. On the one hand, I'm glad to see the FCC calling out cable companies for the debacle that is cable card. But on the other, you have a bunch of HTPC and TiVO owners using cable card and heavily invested, as bad as things have been. Do we really want to start from scratch? *gulp*

AllVid would replace the CableCARD and handle tuning and security functions that are specific to the MVPD. As conceived, that would leave the "smart video device" to do the cooler stuff -- navigation, presentation of interactive program guides, and search. The FCC is also using the NOI to invite "any alternative proposals," so it appears that the agency wants to use this NOI as a gigantic bucket of Play Doh and leave it to others to figure out how to mold its overarching goals into something innovative and feasible.
