Windows Home Server 2011 Goes RTM

Mar 29 2011

It's been a bumpy road for Windows Home Server enthusiasts, but WHS 2011 has finally reached offical release status. I know there have been mixed feelings in the community about the server product previously known as "Vail" since Microsoft announced that WHS would no longer include the Drive Extender technology that was one of the defining characteristics of the original product, but for anyone who has not tried out one of the WHS 2011 betas, there will be an evaluation version available in early April. Beyond that, the WHS team expects OEM systems to start showing up in May.

Today, the Home Server engineering team signed off the release version of WHS 2011. An exciting milestone which now starts the process to make it available for purchase.

Affordable and easy-to-use, Windows Home Server 2011 is the ideal solution to help families keep their important digital files and data automatically backed up, organized, and accessible from virtually anywhere.

I wonder if this will be available to MSDN subs or will they sit on it for a couple years.

According to the announcement, it should be released to Technet and MSDN subscribers in early April. Of course, who knows if they will segregate it to specific subscription plans.
