News - Public Knowledge - Tell Old Media to Keep Their Hands Out of Your DVR

Public Knowledge

There's nothing wrong with advertising per se, but I find the broadcaster's posturing around DISH's recent feature enabling automatic commercial skipping for Primetime TV highly objectionable. While DISH has deep pockets, and the pugnacity to put up a good fight, it shouldn't have to go it alone - with Public Knowledge starting up a campaign to lend us a voice against these audacious claims.

News - NBC to Stream Complete 2012 Summer Olympics with YouTube

Olympics 2012 NBC YouTube

NBC has been the sole source for Olympics coverage in the US for the last several events, and each time, the network has tried to tweak their offerings to best capitalize on their exclusivity. Sometimes this has meant utilizing NBC's secondary cable networks for extended coverage or providing event replays online. This year, NBC seems intent on providing as much coverage as possible, in as many formats as possible. Not only will this Olympics be the first in 3D, but it will also be the first in which every event gets streamed online. To achieve this prodigious feat, NBC has ditched their Silverlight-based web player and cut a deal with YouTube to provide the new backend. The video will actually be available on NBC's site, but it will be all YouTube behind the scenes. Every event will be streamed live, along with recaps and exclusive interviews and commentary. I've always preferred the Winter Olympics, but with NBC getting serious about streaming coverage, I might just find myself willing to explore the summer games a bit more.

More than 3,000 hours of live streaming footage from the Olympics will be broadcast online, making it the most live content, by far, ever to be broadcast from the global competition. In case you were wondering, yes, that equates to every single event during the entire Olympic period will be available to Web surfers in the US. This is the first time that has happened.

News - 2.1 M Streamed Superbowl

Just like its TV counterpart the online version of this years Superbowl set records for viewership with 2.1 million unique views. This figure makes this years Superbowl the most-watched single-game sporting event online besting totals for previous events such as the 2010 world cup, 2010 Olympics and the Annual NCAA basketball tournament. While this was a great turnout it is still a small fraction (1.88%) of the record 111.3 million viewers who chose more traditional channels to view the big game. These figures would seem to suggest that even when provided the option to watch it online viewers still prefer to watch sports the old fashioned way.

NEW YORK -- The first live stream of the Super Bowl drew 2.1 million unique viewers, NBC said Thursday.

That's a small fraction of the record 111.3 million viewers that watched NBC's broadcast of the big game. But it was still enough to make it the most-watched single-game sports event online, according to the network.

So missingremote which way did you choose to watch the big game?

News - Panasonic and NBC Team Up for Olympics in 3D

NBC will be televising the London 2012 Olympic Games in 3D this year in partnership with Panasonic. The two companies announced at CES that NBC will be relying on Panasonic technologies to produce the 3D broadcasts which will be shown in the U.S. on next-day delay. It would seem that details are still being worked out as NBC is not specifying which service providers will be carrying the 3D broadcasts, though it is probably safe to assume that Comcast will be one of them. Which Summer Olympic event would you most like to see in 3D?

Javelin

The 200-plus hours of 3D coverage, to be produced by OBS and shown on next-day delay in the U.S., will use Panasonic's technology and include such eyeball-grabbing events as the pening and closing ceremonies, swimming, diving and gymnastics.

News - Superbowl Available for Online Streaming

Well at the super bowl this season the NFL will finally make its first steps into the 21st century and for the first time in its history the Super Bowl will be available to stream online. NBC will use the same silver light streaming engine that it currently uses to stream Sunday night football night games and while it won't require any authentication to prove that you subscribe to a cable service, access will be restricted to only customers located in the US. Oddly enough the stream will feature different ads from those on the live feed and will allow viewers to rewind review all the ads / football action that they desire:

Interestingly enough, the online stream of the Super Bowl will have its own set of ads run against it, which will be different from those shown on the TV broadcast. But since NBC knows that the groundbreaking ads brands pay big money for are a big draw for much of its audience, it’ll make those ads available on one feed of the online broadcast as well. And since it has DVR functionality, viewers will be able to back up and watch them over again, just like they would with a DVR

So how many of you will watch the super bowl via the online stream on your HTPC's as opposed to tuning into the live feed?

News - Fall TV New Shows NBC

I just posted about GeekTonic list about ABC Shows, and Mike posted links to GeekTonic's FOX shows. But this is the one I am most excited about. NBC seems to have some of the better if not most talked about new shows. Whitney looks funny and witty and looking forward to that one. Smash is a new musical based show like Glee but about making a Broadway show, it has some potential. The Playboy Club is also in this mix and it has presented itself as a drama and crime type series, defenitly worth a watch once or twice. Grimm is one that doesn't look like it has much hope, GeekTonic talks about his opionons here:

A new sci-fi drama from NBC that has an intriguing concept, but I don’t give it much hope. Unfortunately they have it matched up with Fringe and Supernatural – in similar formats at the same timeslots. Not a good way to introduce a new show especially on a Friday. Grimm was originally slated to be a mid-season replacement last year and never made it out so the network obviously doesn’t have a high opinion of it already.
