News - MythTV Is Now Forked As Torc

Well this is interesting news.  It appears that one of the MythTV developers is splitting off the MythTV project with his own branch of code.  It look like the idea is to drop a lot of the legacy support in order to modernize the project more quickly and easily.  One of the things that I liked about MythTV is the ability to run it on older hardware.  At one point I had a MythTV server with three analog tuners running on a Pentium II 400MHz CPU. I thought that was impressive.  However, that was a number of years ago and at this point I have to say that I fully support the desire to drop support of older systems in order to bring in new features and bling.  It will be interesting to see where this project goes and I will be sure to keep an eye on it.

From an anonymous Phoronix reader I received the following message:

News - Proposed release schedule for MythTV 0.25

I recently posted that MythTV 0.24.2 was released.  Well, one of the developers of MythTV has posted to the list a proposed schedule for MythTV 0.25.  This is the first schedule that I've seen with actual dates.  Keep in mind that these are targets and not hard deadlines.  MythTV devs have always said that they will release updates when they are ready and not on some arbitrary schedule.  But hopefully we'll see something this spring!

All,

The current timetable for release of MythTV 0.25 is:-

Feature Freeze: 12th Feb
0.25 Beta        : 4th March
0.25 RC1        : 18th March
0.25 Release   : 2nd April

A 'soft freeze' for translatable strings will also come into effect
with the feature freeze with a hard freeze at the same time as RC1.

regards

Mark

News - MythTV 0.24.2 Now Available

It looks like I'm behind the times again.  Over the weekend the MythTV project has released version 0.24.2.  This release is mainly a backport of bug fixes that will be added into 0.25 once it is released.  This release is not meant to provide any new major features.  You still need to wait for 0.25 for that.  However, if you have run into any stability problems or anything, this is an update that you'll probably want.

If you are interested in how my 0.24.1 installation of MythTV went, please check out my blog entries.

0.24.2, the second release from the stable branch is now available. For a list of fixes made since 0.24.2 see the Release Notes.

News - Ceton InfiniTV 4 in MythTV 0.24

For our MythTV users (I've got a system running myself) check out this three part blog on adding Ceton InfiniTV support to your MythTV 0.24 system courtesy of developer Ron Frazier.

With the pending release of the SiliconDust HD Homerun Prime, I was getting pretty excited about getting a cablecard tuner for MythTV. However, then something wonderful happened...Ceton decided to drop the price of the InfiniTV 4 card to $300. I hadn't been very interested in the card before simply because it was a bit out of my desired price range. However, at the new price, it was barely more expensive than the Prime, and it gave you a 4th tuner to run off the same cablecard. After thinking about it for a few weeks, I decided to cancel my HDHR Prime preorder and take a chance on the Ceton card.

I said take a chance, because I knew that the Ceton card wasn't yet supported in MythTV. However, I had some ideas how I could hack support into myth 0.24, and failing that, I was under the impression that the trunk code of mythtv (which will eventually be 0.25) already had the code necessary to work with the Ceton. So I figured one way or another, I was covered with the caveat that I wouldn't be working with a proven, tested system.
