I don't mean this in a snobbish way, but I think he outlined the purpose quite well in his introduction to the guide.  I can attest to the trials and tribulations associated with trying to get the right filters to playback all your files and then adjusting the merits so that the filter you WANT to be used actually does get used.

This is meant to stablilize an HTPC for reliable playback, with a focus on SageTV.  That doesn't mean this won't work for non-SageTV users, however; quite the contrary.  So, will this improve your playback quality?  Possibly.  If you're having jitter issues, jaggies, audio dropouts or stuttering, then this may help.  When I move to Windows 7 on my client PC, I definitely intend to turn to this rather than installing any other codecs or codec packs.

Would using your filter pack provide me with some level of improved picture quality similar to what ffdshow would offer?  If so, any recommendations on the settings over and above your recommended settings in the installation guide?  I use Zoomplayer Pro primarily for DVD and mkv playback, but I have other playback apps I use as well (TMT, PDVD, MediaPlayer Classic, TheaterTek, Nero).

Modern video cards have excellent PQ so it's been a long time since I messed with ffdshow for post processing.

I currently have 8600GT, 4650, and G45 based systems; IMO the G45 produces the best picture, but is somewhat quirky in what sw works with it (they don't use standard DXVA methods).  IMO the benefits of good hardware acceleration far outweigh any incremental gain that SW based post processing provides.

Slightly OT but what decoders have you found that work the best with the G45?

I use an updated copy of ArcSoft TMT that comes with the HD PVR for h.264 & vc-1 and the ATI AVIVO mpeg decoder for ATSC content.

The unupdated rev has a good vc-1 decoder, but the h.264 one has many issues resolved in the 1096 update.  Problem is that applying the update doesn't change the filters so you have to manually copy them to the original install directory.

I use arcsoft 2 because arcsoft 3 did not play well with MyMovies. something do do with it not accepting command line parameters to play content from a folder. Which really sucks because I paid for 3 to have W7 compatability. Was to the 1096 update for 2 or 3?

OK, I'm obviously dense.  I've got a G45 board with HDMI output.  I would like to pass-through PCM, AC3 and DTS and have TMT3 decode the HD audio types to LPCM.  None of the settings I see here relate to HDMI as far as I can see.  Is there a way to accomplish my goal or do I have to decode and pass LPCM for all of the formats?

FWIW, I use TMT3 for Blu-Ray playback and Zoomplayer for everything else.

There should be a 5.1 or 7.1 setting in the audio configuration.

I've never used Zoomplayer so someone else will need to chime in on that one.

Wow, quick reply!

I figured it out.  I hadn't selected "Use SPDIF" under the AC3Filter settings since I wasn't using S/PDIF, but turning that on seems to have worked.

BTW, switching to AntiPack also solved a stuttering problem I've been experiencing ever since I switched to W7RC, I'm guessing it was caused by FFDShow.

Thanks!

Does anyone know if this "antipack" solves a stuttering problem in Windows 7 with mkv?  On mine, running Win 7 RC with Matroska Splitter installed, if I fast forward or skip while playing an mkv, the video starts to stutter terribly.  As long as that's not touched, it will play fine.  Anyone else see this?  Think maybe this is just an RC problem and will be better in the final version?

There's a known issue with MKV playback on build 7100.  I haven't seen any problems with RTM, but I'm still playing around with it before putting it on my main box.

OK, I spoke too soon.  Yes, turning on SPDIF pass-through causes my receiver to detect a Dolby Digital signal, however it's only 2-channel (not 5.1).  When I look at the filter graph I see AC3Filter's input pin getting a 6-channel signal, but it's outputting a 2-channel signal.  I've got my default DirectSound device set to 5.1, but AC3Filter is determined that this is only a stereo device...

I tried Media Classic Home Theatre just to see if it's Zoomplayer causing the issue, and got the same result, so I suspect there's something wrong with the G45 audio drivers.  Any other thoughts would be appreciated...

By def, bitstreamed audio can't be downsampled so something weird is going on.  I doubt that it's the drivers, I have a DG45ID and it works really well.

what's your speaker setup in the sound settings (control panel)?  have you tried reclock with wasapi?  it will bypass those settings and can do direct mapping.  Did you configure SPDIF pass through exactly as noted in the antipack walk through?

That's what you'd think, but I've eliminated any extra filters and configured AC3Filter as described in the walk through as well as tried all sorts of other combinations and the only time I get surround sound is when I disable SPDIF pass-through.

Do you use S/PDIF or HDMI with your DG45ID?  Have you installed any sound drivers other than the G45 drivers?  The P5Q-EM has a Realtek audio chipset and I had some issues getting the control panel to allow me to select 5.1 surround which is why I suspect a driver issue.

My speaker setup in the control panel is set to 5.1 surround.  No, I haven't tried reclock, that was my next step.

I use the HDMI, never tried SPDIF on the DG45ID (which uses IDT audio drivers).

Try rendering the file in graphstudio with ac3filter set to spdif mode, then add the output you want explicitly instead of the default dsound renderer.

Another thing to check in the audio control panel is that DD Live is not enabled.
