News - Hulu Plus, CyberLink PowerDVD 12 and PowerDVD Mobile Arrive on Windows 8

With the release of Windows 8, we are going to see a steady stream of streaming media apps make a splash on Windows 8 and the Windows Store. Netflix got in early, and this week brought a Hulu Plus app and new versions of CyberLink PowerDVD. The Hulu Plus app takes full advantage of the Metro/Modern/Windows 8 UI with touch controls, pin to Start screen, and Snap View. As a Hulu Plus app, it is only useful to Hulu Plus subscribers, so fortunately the free Hulu is just a website away.

At Hulu, we are relentless about creating beautiful, intuitive and engaging experiences that help you find and enjoy popular current season TV shows whenever you want, on whatever device you want. Which is why we are so proud to announce the Hulu Plus app is now available on one of the newest operating systems: Windows 8.

PowerDVD Mobile for Windows 8

CyberLink has announced two new versions of PowerDVD with the release of PowerDVD 12 and PowerDVD Mobile for Windows 8. PowerDVD 12 is a fairly standard upgrade to their traditional x86 desktop software. For $14.99, or for free with the purchase of PowerDVD 12, PowerDVD Mobile brings some basic video and photo editing, and MPEG and MKV support to the new Windows 8 UI. The company is also promising an Ultra version of PowerDVD Mobile for Windows 8 is in the works, but they are not offering any specific details at this point. Unfortunately, PowerDVD Mobile does not support Windows RT, so anyone who drank the Redmond Kool-Aid and picked up a Surface is going to have to look elsewhere for their MKV fix.

CyberLink Corp. (5203.TW), a provider of innovative media creation solutions, today launched an updated version of its award-winning media player, PowerDVD 12, along with newPowerDVD Mobile to ensure users of Microsoft’s upcoming Windows® 8 operating system continue to enjoy a premium entertainment experience on their new Windows 8 PCs.

News - WWE Doubles Down on Hulu Plus

Hulu WrestlerFew types of content bring in the 13-24 male demographic quite as consistently as professional wrestling, and in the world of pro wrestling, the WWE is the brand that rules the ring. Generations of young American males have grown out of professional wrestling, unaware that the "sport" continued with a new audience. The WWE is hoping to bring some of that perennial cachet online by signing an exclusive deal with Hulu to bring WWE programming to Hulu Plus the day after it airs on various cable networks. The WWE has made archive material available through Hulu for a while, but this deal marks a major push for the WWE into digital distribution. It's also reasonable to assume Hulu is looking forward to being a part of that push, particularly given the large video game console cross-over audience the company can look forward to tapping into.

Beginning today, subscribers of Hulu's paid service will be able to watch WWE's roster of shows that currently includes WWE's "Monday Night Raw," "Friday Night SmackDown," "WWE NXT," "WWE Superstars," "WWE Main Event" and "WWE en Espanol." Deal could eventually include "WWE Saturday Morning Slam," which recently began airing on the CW's new Vortexx-branded kids programming block, produced by Saban Brands.

News - Hulu Plus, MAX Go, and HBO GO for iOS Add Closed Caption Support, Hulu Plus Overhauled for Playstation 3

The big iOS news of the week may have been Apple's iPhone 5 announcement and the opening of the preorder floodgates, but some big names in the streaming media business have been sneaking around releasing updates to their apps. The Hulu Plus, MAX GO, and HBO GO iOS apps have all received updates to offer support for closed captions. That this feature is only just coming to these mobile apps surprises me, even leaving aside the obvious issue of accessibility for the hearing-impaired. For one thing, these companies already deal heavily in closed captioned content, Hulu on their website, and Cinemax and HBO through their cable channels, so the need for support in their apps should not have been a surprise. On top of that, watching streaming media on a mobile device seems far more likely to put one in a noisy situation where one would desire captions to supplement the audio. Hopefully the other mobile platforms will be seeing similar updates soon.

In a move that should please the hard of hearing and anyone trying to watch a video quietly sans-headphones, the Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Max Go apps for iOS devices have all recently been updated with support for closed captions.

Hulu Plus on PS3

Hulu wasn't devoting all of their attention to their iOS app this week. The Hulu Plus iOS update comes with more than just closed captioning support, but it is not nearly as radical an update as the Playstation 3 got his week. The Hulu Plus app for the Playstation 3 received a significant overhaul that fundamentally changes the browsing interface, slims down and simplifies the playback controls, and offers improvements to search to make accessing results easier. The greater emphasis on artwork certainly helps to make the new interface pretty, as well.

We’ve implemented a tray-style format that allows you to scroll through recommendations based on your viewing history, or check out popular shows and movies, the top 100 clips on Hulu Plus, movie trailers and more. We’ve also included a “Shows You Watch” feature that highlights the content you regularly enjoy, and lets you jump straight to the latest episode.

News - Subscriber Growth Seen Slowing for Netflix, Hulu Plus

Netflix and Hulu Falling

Most conversations regarding cord cutters tend to focus on the impact of cable company revenues as subscribers jump ship for the considerably less expensive option of streaming media services such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. Not everyone sees this trend continuing, in large part because of rises in streaming media subscription rates. The Convergence Consulting Group has issued a report suggesting that rising licensing costs will force companies like Netflix and Hulu to raise their rates, negatively impacting subscriber growth. The research firm points to turmoil that Netflix experienced last year as evidence of the kind of backlash that streaming media services will face in the future. Of course, one point that Convergence Consulting Group may not be taking into consideration is that cable television package rates have not held steady in recent years and are not likely to in the future either. Will the cost of Netflix and Hulu Plus go up faster than the cost of cable television?

In 2011, only 112,000 U.S. citizens signed up for cable TV packages. This is a significant drop from 272,000 who signed up in 2010.
However, Convergence Consulting Group doesn't see this trend lasting. In fact, it expects a decrease in the number of customers signing up for internet streaming services throughout 2012 and 2013 because of rising licensing costs.

News - Hulu Plus App for Nintendo Wii Now Available

Hulu Plus subscribers can finally get their waggle on. The Nintendo Wii has added Hulu Plus to its list of downloadable apps in the Wii Shop Channel. There will also be a version of the Hulu Plus app for the Nintendo 3DS before the end of the year. Now, please note that I am quite aware that Nintendo does not consider the Wii a media consumption device, but it has been over a year since the Netflix app came to the Wii, and that's without adding in the six months of Netflix on the Wii via disc. Here's hoping that Nintendo has a better media streaming story to tell with the Wii U.

Bored with experiencing Hulu Plus through the same old ... interfaces? Get rid of that Hulu Plus ennui with Hulu Plus on Wii. Nintendo announced that the service is now available through the Wii in the US as of today.

News - Hulu Grows to 1.5M Paying Subscribers, Ready to Spend Big on Content

It would seem that Hulu is ready to celebrate the New Year by going shopping. In a recent blog post, Jason Kilar, Hulu's CEO, gave an update on the status of the company and how they performed over the last year. I personally have never seen the value proposition in paying for a media streaming service that includes commercials, but obviously some folks disagree given that Hulu has grown Hulu Plus to 1.5 million paid subscribers. That may not be the most impressive number with Netflix boasting 20 million subscribers, but it means that Hulu Plus wrapped up 2011 with about 5 times as many subscribers as the service had at the end of 2010.

Hulu

The company credits the subscriber growth to their heavy investment in developing apps for mobile devices, consoles, and other devices. They also credit their heavy investment in content acquisition over the last year, the lion's share of which was dedicated to Hulu Plus. The end result of a growing subscriber base and better than expected ad revenue has been a 60% growth in revenue year over year to $420 million, which brings us back to the shopping. To ensure that Hulu and Hulu Plus continues to grow this year, Hulu will be devoting $500M to securing content over the next year. Any thoughts on what Hulu should try to add first?

In 2011, we dramatically expanded the content available to Hulu and Hulu Plus customers. Hulu’s content offering grew approximately 40% vs 2010; Hulu Plus’ content offering grew more than 105%. Hulu Plus is the only online video subscription service that offers current season content from 5 of the 6 largest U.S. broadcast networks, with shows from The CW and Univision added this past quarter. In 2011, we added a long roster of great current series, including Grimm, Once Upon a Time, Misfits, Revenge, Terra Nova, Up All Night, New Girl, Una Familia Con Suerte, The Secret Circle, Hart of Dixie, Ringer, Community and many more.

News - Hulu Plus Having a Growing Impact on Bottom Line

Rumors have swirled since early summer that Hulu was up for sale, but that has not stopped the company from pushing ahead with it business plans and seeking out new content. Hulu's CEO, Jason Kilar, recently posted an update on the company's Q3 performance on the Hulu Blog in which he highlighted Hulu's newest major content partner, Univision, which he expects will help Hulu grow its influence with the U.S.'s increasingly influential Hispanic population.

Kilar also highlighted the growth of Hulu Plus, the company's premium subscription service. According to Kilar, Hulu Plus is now available on 120 million devices and has garnered over a million subscribers, which by Hulu's calculations, makes Hulu Plus the fastest ramping video subscription service. All of this in less than a year since exiting the invite-only phase for Hulu Plus and right on the heels of launching in Japan. As a result of all this momentum, Kilar expects Hulu Plus to represent more than half of the company's revenue within 12 months.

The Hulu Plus revenue target comes with a caveat: Kilar didn’t actually say that more than half of the company’s revenue will be based on subscription fees, because Hulu Plus also shows ads. However, the emphasis on Hulu Plus and subscription revenue is definitely noteworthy, particularly because Kilar has in the past wasted no opportunity to talk about the importance of advertising revenue for his company.

News - Vizio's Tablet Gets Hulu Plus

Vizio recently released their first Android tablet, and now Vizio has the first Android tablet that can access Hulu Plus. The fact that the Vizio Tablet runs Gingerbread instead of the tablet-focused Honeycomb probably helped. There are a number of Gingerbread-based smartphones running Hulu Plus already, requiring the Hulu app developers to expend relativly little effort tweaking the app and certifying the device.

Vizio has taken a fairly low key approach in marketing their tablet, but one consistent message has been Vizio's focus on the Tablet as an entertainment and media device. I suspect that we will be seeing other similar services coming to the Vizio Tablet.

While it sounds like it would have made more sense for Hulu to work on support for one of the more high-profile Android tablets first, the reason it went with Vizio's offering is likely that it is powered by Android 2.3, the same version of Android that most of the Hulu-supported phones run, as opposed to Android 3.0+ ("Honeycomb").

In addition to letting users stream a huge back catalog of movies and TV shows, the largest value in Hulu Plus is that users are able to watch the most recent episodes on their supported devices.

News - Hulu and Miramax Reach Streaming Deal

While I personally am not a fan of internet streaming video, mostly because of low bit rate and lack of surround sound audio, I know many readers of Missing Remote are fans. The news of Miramax and Hulu striking a deal is great news for those fans. Adding additional content and having a wide array of access can only be a good thing.

Right on the heels of the announcement that Miramax and Netflix had agreed to a deal come the news that Hulu has also secured a content deal with Miramax.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new deal will bring hundreds of films to the streaming service, including films like Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction, and Gangs of New York. The catch is that on Hulu Plus members will have unrestricted access. Films will rotate through the free portion of the site.

No financial details were disclosed. The deal is a multi-year one that has already begun with Hulu advertising the deal on their website. Hulu will see a 15 movie rotation every month.
