Wooden HTPC Case?

I am considering constructing a HTPC Case from wood and don't really know if it is a good idea.

Has anyone ever attempted or considered constructing a wooden HTPC Case? Would the wood make it too difficult to cool? Noisy? Or... would there even be a market for wooden HTPC Cases? Maybe custom stained...

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I think I remember seeing something like that either here or over at SPCR.com.  Try searching the forums.

The materials used in building a case really shouldn't matter as long as you plan your airflow. Heat should move out in with the airflow substantially quicker then radiating off aluminum or wood. Unless you use the case itself as a heatsink.

I have seen a few wooden cases, and they really do not appeal to me in the least.

That one is pretty slick. I found a few more, but nothing tremendously classy. One 70's style build that was quite impressive, but not so much my style.

I think in order to make a wooden case, it would definitely need to be a very classy device. I think I will read and look more. If I find anything of interest I let you all know. And... if I do actually make the venture to assemble such a beast, I will keep you all in the loop.

Cheers!

This one is my favorite.  It's made from a humidor.  I know it's not really a HTPC case, but I gotta mention it when I see wood cases Smile

Damn, that humidor is sexy. I think a wood case could be extremely attractive if you really put the effort in. The downside being if you don't put the effort in it could look pretty ghetto. It should be pretty easy to steal brackets, etc from a regular case and mount them on wood for internal components. I'd probably also try to place it so that it's on display rather than in a rack if you're going to put the time in to really make the wood look nice.

Are there any EMI problems with wood cases?

Most likely.

Another sweet case with real sliding doors:

I found this that I feel is pretty awesome.

This has a wooden enclosure behind. But I was thinking of maybe finding an antique Radio and using it as the front. I could build in maybe a slot load DVD drive and embedding other electronics so they don't really show.
Tomorrow I am going to start looking for components. If I can end up using an antique component, it will save me having to manufacture a perfect front and can give a very sharp look that hides what it really is. Ebay has some cheap radios and the ones that are a little worn just need sanding and refinishing...

We shall see..
