Windows Home Server Power Pack 2 Is Here

Original Article Link

I just noticed all my news submissions haven't included my name.  Then I realized I hadn't logged out and back in since the update to MR.  Anyone else having this issue or who doesn't see the "submit news" button on the right-hand side of the front page, please log out and sign in again.

Back on topic... I'm sure my WHS box will have downloaded this by the time I get home, so I'll report back if anything has died with Sage or any of my add-ins.  I just hope it hasn't messed with any of the unofficial things I've done to WHS.  Oups

So does this mean we can use TSMuxer to rip movies to one of the available HD sources and then run MyMovies from a 360 with no issues?

Does this increase the CPU requirement of the server? And will the way WHS pools the data provide enough bandwidth to feed multiple extenders?

So does this mean that WHS can be recorded too from VMC (or that the VMC system can copy over recorded content to be accessed from other VMC machines, etc)?

no, you still can't use the WHS as your default recording location. Just that if you have any Recorded TV in your WHS, it's automatically added to your TV programs available.

That's pretty dumb on MS' part.  So, what exactly IS expected to be stored there?  Sage recordings?!?!  ;D

On a side note, I screwed up my client HTPC on Monday and decided to try my hand at restoring to that morning's image, but I'm not having much success.  I believe it's a driver issue, but am working through it.  I have a feeling it's related to the fact that my client PC's C: drive is in a RAID 1.  I did upgrade to PP2 to see if that would change anything, but it didn't.  It also didn't appear to break anything, which is good.

I'm currently downloading the latest "dual boot" restore CD from MS.  I'm hoping that it will be the missing piece of the restore puzzle.  I'll have to remember to add this dilemma and resolution to my client blog.

It took about 6 or 7 attempts at restoring, plus a reboot of the server, a power cycle of the switch, turning on DHCP (as opposed to a static IP) for the server at the firewall, plus using the original restore CD and a thumb drive with the ethernet drivers from the backup and the Intel ICH8 chipset and associated RAID drivers from the mobo's website, but it finally worked!

I'm going to press my luck this weekend and try to repeat the feat, so I can try to pinpoint what from the above actually caused it to finally work.  I can say that when it works, it's pretty efficient and only took about an hour or so.

I'm so annoyed!

So I installed PP2, rebooted all boxes, saw clients wanted to update connector software, did it, rebooted.

Moved some recordings to the new WHS folder 'recorded TV'. Rebooted.

Now, how the Hell do I access these recordings? They don't show in the Recorded TV folder on the VMC box I originally recorded them on.

Just for laughs called up the My Video Library menu item on VMC box, and it shows Video folder on WHS, but not the Recorded TV folder.

I went to properties of the WHS Recorded TV folder, and made access 'FULL'.

Last, went to the Media Center icon in WHS settings, granted access to Media Center PCs and extenders .

Am I missing something here?

You need to use the Windows Media Center Connector that should now be in your start menu.  After that (+ reboot), your VMC client will be able to see the WHS shares.  You may have to remove/re-add those locations in your "watched folders" however, as they may not show up without rescanning the media.

Doh!

It was the "watched folders" issue.

Thanks for the reminder.

My client PC apparently came down with Alzheimer's yesterday, since a ton of things disappeared from the Start menu, the startup folder, and services which should've started.  I have no idea what caused this.  I wound up doing a restore from Tuesday night's WHS backup and it only faled once.  After the first failure, I disabled the power saving feature for spinning down the hard drives and entering standby.  I had the client PC restored in about 30 minutes on the second try.  I changed absolutely nothing else.

So, it would seem that the other "voodoo" I did back in March actually didn't do anything.  (No surprise there.)  It may have simply been the power saving features.
