What's your HTPC Wallpaper?

Mar 25 2010

Simple question. I used to have some fancy HTPC ones i grabbed over at AVSForum years ago, but lost them during one of my migrations, and now i'm simply using a plain black.

So what are you guys using? If you can post pictures, that'd be sweet! I'd be curious if you guys all hide your icons or what?

I just have windows 7 pick a random picture from my pictures library and use that, it changes every 10m i think? perhaps an unnecessary use of resources, but the htpc has resources to spare.

I have my icons hidden and use the Windows Media Center background I extracted from the resource dll: http://s.mikinho.com/img/background.png

For a background image on my new SageTV builds, I usually use some of the more abstract computer geometric or rendered images from DeviantArt.com...can't be more specific now as work blocks it because of 'incidental nudity' (at least the filtering is 'neutral' i.e. they don't assume you're wicked for trying to link there, they just won't let you).

For my plain desktop background (Vista) I swap around periodically (not automated, just when the fancy catches me) between different underwater photographs I've taken on scuba trips.  Looking forward to a W7 build that automates that. (lazy, I know)

I use interfacelift to create my own themes.  However I rarely have my desktop showing its usually MC7 and its screen saver displaying my photos

Same here, with the exception of when the HTPC is resuming from sleep.  There is a brief window where Media Center is restarting (I'm using babgvant's Standby Tool).  Having the background match, taskbar hidden and the Media Startup startup sound\animation disabled (via registry) makes for a more fluid CE experience, at least for my preferences.

Ocassionaly I grab a theme. Currently it is the tiger theme, prior to that it was an angry monkey and before that I went online and grabbed a bunch of HD HDR photos that really look good on the big screen.

see for me, since i'm often jumping to the desktop to launch IE to go to a website, i see the desktop frequently. Although i like that idea of the MCE background....may have to steal your idea Tongue keep em coming!

I use NASA\Hubble pictures for backgrounds and screen saver on my SageTV clients.  Because of the Transparent menus not everything will work well as a background but most are fairly dark.

I too go the black screen route. It was just easy. What I need to do is strip out Arcsoft's artwork for when I playback dvd's and blu-rays.

so difficult. if you delete the file it uses, it gets rid of the screen but with a bright white screen instead of hte splash, so it's even worse. I looked into it for quite a while and couldn't get around it. It's not as simple as just an art file it points to.

Are you asking for non-Media Center usage?  When integrated with Media Center it opens in fullscreen without the splash screen (unless I'm going crazy, can't test right now).

For non-Media Cener HTPC software you could always launch uMCEDVDPlayer.exe instead of the default though it might not blend well due to the MC theme.

Mikinho, my friend, you are CRAZY Smile I promise you, when you launch Arcsoft via Media Center, you get the Arcsoft splash screen.

The palm leaf that comes with windows vista.  Before that it was the bamboo forest that comes with windows vista.  Now that I think about it, the only other wallpaper I've used on my HTPC was an image with a checkerboard pattern of black and white pixels when I was trying to get a 1-1 pixel mapping.
Pretty boring, I know.

You're right, I was am crazy =/

I'll explain via GChat...

I cycle through a bunch of high res backgrounds I've downloaded from interfacelift.com and digitalblasphemy.com.  I actually have a paid membership to DB because of just how much I love the guy's work.  Everything on his sight is rendered by him and he even does multi-monitor renders.

I do not hide my icons either.  EG is set to open SageTV and ensure it's fullscreen when I hit "watch tv" on my Harmony remote, so the desktop is generally hidden under most circumstances.

Wallpaper on a HTPC?

You have all gone crazy.

Well I stopped using a dedicated HTPC almost 2 years ago, so I see my desktop quite often. Although now it's a hell of a lot less since I use my macbook pro for daily computer duties however. When I am on the PC though, I've been using some of the Windows 7 themes:

I think I've got Japan on there now.

Can you send me a link to that checkerboard pattern. I might actually try to setup my TV right for once.

since I discovered dreamscapes I've gone that route

I have the rotating earth on almost all of my screens now.  I just love how it integrates time changes into the shading and lights of the world

I see a bunch of dreamscapes links. Which one do you use?

I think I remember finding a thread earlier that explained in detail how to substitute the artwork. I'll have to dig it back up.

So I installed the NGC wallpaper and that evening I required a forced reboot because when switching to my HTPC input all I saw was a black screen. I got lucky once working the MCE GUE blind and getting the app to restart but I had to hold the power button for 4 seconds the other time.
I havne't tried it yet but I think it is better to use the Media center screen saver and point to play the photos in the MGC directory.

There must be an issue with Windows OS screensaver when Media Center is running.

Does anyone know of a way to get DreamScene working in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit?  I tried these instructions, but I don't get the "set as desktop background" for any video files when I right-click them.  I've tried multiple MPG files (as well as other formats which aren't supposed to work), but I don't get that option.
