Vista "sleep" problems on my Asus p5K mobo HTPC

Hi.  Just built my HTPC with an Asus P5K Premium mobo, and put on Vista Home Premium.  Would love to use the sleep function of Vista, and it sure works going to sleep (Power LED flashing on case).  The problem is it stays asleep and will not awaken in response to pressing the power switch.  The suspend mode in the Asus BIOS was set on [AUTO] , so I changed this to [S3 Only].  No help.  [S1 (POS) only], the same.  I have heard that older NVidia drivers are a problem, but mine are brand new, v.163.  Does anyone have an idea how to approach this?  Much obliged!!

Hrm. I don't have an answer to this, but I'm extremely interested in whatever anyone else has to say since I'm planning on buying an Asus P5K SE quite shortly and will be installing my copy of Vista Ultimate on it. Are you sure that when you heard about nvidia drivers being the problem that they weren't referring to chipset drivers? Like nForce... not video (geforce). Just wondering because the P5K series is not an nvidia chipset, it's Intel P35.

If your Power LED is flashing, I don't think you're in Vista's "Sleep" mode.  With our Vista installs, when you hit the power button on the Remote (which defaults to Sleep mode) the computer appears that it's off entirely (it's not) and thePower LED goes dark until you wake it - WinXP's "Standby" mode caused the LED to blink when we were using MCE 2005.

Generally speaking you need to set "S3 Only" in the BIOS before you install the OS.  With my hardware, I really didn't need to do anything else.  On some MB's, in order for the USB IR transceiver to work properly you need to be sure jumpers are set for power to the USB ports in standby - mine don't - but I've had them both ways.

You can also check your power settings and make sure your power down settings are right and choose which mode is active.  (there are some different choices in Vista)  Again, for me the defaults are correct, the only thing I change is probably "allow hybrid sleep" - I turn that off...

Dude...  How old IS this FusionHDTV3 ???

Nope... my P5K SE does sleep with the LED flashing. It otherwise appears off. No fans spinning, no anything. You wouldn't know it was even getting power if it wasn't for that LED. It took me about a week of fussing with it to get it to stay asleep (it would always immediately wake back up). It would even go to sleep on its own when it was supposed to. But now I've found that it won't sleep on its own anymore, I have to do it manually. And when I do (like, when I leave for work in the morning) I come back much later and it's back on again. It's not waking immediately like it used to, but it's waking none the less. I don't know what could be waking it up or why it will no longer sleep on its own considering I haven't changed anything and it was working just fine earlier this month.

I'm experiencing the very same thing with my new Vista build. When I originally built it and configured it, S3 worked perfectly in every respect. Now, I can put it to sleep but it wakes sometimes later (could be 90 minutes -- could be 9 hours) and then won't go back to sleep. It does wake for scheduled recordings, but then won't go back to sleep then either. The only major difference between when S3 was working properly and now is that I configured networking (ahhh...networking! ). I'm still trying to figure out what the dealy-o is.

Yeah, it's very intermittent. I put it to sleep the other day when I left for work, and I came home and it was still asleep. Last night I put it to sleep before bed, and when I got up this morning it was awake. Totally random.

I'm pretty sure I'd already set up networking when I first had mine working ok though, because I got a new router along with all the parts while building my new PC.  But I'm wondering if there were any network settings that I've changed since then from installing things, specifically any media center related stuff. I haven't had any recorded shows or anything I would have expected to wake it up. I even tried changing to hibernate to see if that made a difference (other than taking about 3 seconds longer to wake up, the answer is no).

As I've disabled most services that I would imagine would wake the system, I'm pretty sure the system is waking to refresh the network connection. This theory is backed up by entries in the system log.

I have WakeOnLAN disabled at both the BIOS level and the driver level. I also have the "Allow this device to wake the system" option unchecked for the ethernet driver. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference, though.

Come to think of it, this issue only arose after I updated Vista with all the neat-o patches you get to do after a new install. Because I initially had a problem installing my networking controller, I wasn't able to update Vista for a week or so after I built it. That was when the system was working great in regard to S3. Maybe SP1 for Vista will right the wrongs introduced since the initial code release ().

Oh, just FYI, the LED also stays blinking when the system is in hibernation.

I'm going to go into my BIOS settings and see if I have WakeOnLAN enabled or not and get back to ya.

Question, where is the system log so I can see what events are occurring? I'm still finding my way around Vista. Used to XP.

Try right clicking on the MY COMPUTER icon and choosing MANAGE from the context menu (I think that still works).  I am currently at work and I don't use Vista here, I will verify when I get home and post, If someone else hasn't already answered.

Yes, finding what you want, after moving to Vista from XP, is a bit of a challenge.  Some things are cool and others are "Why did they have to change that?"

Have you double checked the ADVANCED hardware settings of your NIC as well?

I'm at work now too, so I'll have to try when I get home. Thanks!

The system logs should be in the same place as XP. Just like Ugadata said, right click My Computer>Manage>System Tools>Event Viewer>[logs].

@Ugadata: Yeah, I've turned off any of the NIC advanced properties that I would imagine correlate to some kind of wake-up capability (but I'm just shooting in the dark at this point).

Yeah, that method still works, although the final screen is rearranged.

Yeah, I expected you may have already looked in the NIC properties but is kinda buried and easy to forget.

Hmm. Well it's still not network related in my case I think. I've managed to get it to sleep on its own again. All I did was restore all the default power settings, change from S1 to S3 in the bios, then went back in and customized the power settings. Oddly enough, it's working again. I just don't get it considering I hadn't changed anything in between when it had been working before and now. I have to assume a program I installed is what caused it. Something was changed somewhere that I just couldn't find.

Oh, and the LED does turn off for S3, but not S1 for me.

@jennyfur: Did you load optimized defaults in BIOS (mine loads S3 as the default setting) or did you just reset the default power settings in Vista?

By default, "auto" had been set in my BIOS. I forced it to S3 myself. Then I went into Vista and reset the default power settings there as well.

By the way, just wanted to remind you that I have the P5K SE so there might be small differences beyond just the layout of the boards.

My Vista build is actually using an abit AN-M2HD 7050PV/630a board.

I seem to have it narrowed down to only waking itself back up at 1:00AM. So it may be some service setting or software call that's waking it up to use the network connection.
Either way, I wouldn't really mind as long as it went back to sleep 15 minutes later (like it's set to), but it doesn't. I'll try resetting the Vista power settings and see whether that makes any difference.

Well, seems I still never managed to get the system sleeping properly. Hibernate, yes... but sleep, no. Anyway I just thought I'd mention this program I found that may be helpful to the other people that were having issues in this thread:
