Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player for under $200

Circuit City has the Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player for $200.  Plus, there is a coupon floating around that gets you $40 off a $200 purchase.  See here for details.  Coupon info is in the comments.

At this price, I put this on my Christmas wishlist. I've realized that I'll be holding off on adding  HDM to my HTPC for a little while, but when I do add it I'll go dual format. So in the mean time this seems like a great way to start getting at least some HDM goodness.

WOW!!! That's a GREAT price!  ;D

Thanks for the info, autoboy!  Wink

Now, I couldn't find it in the link you provided, but does it also support HD Xvid/DivX file, I mean High-Definition AVI files?

If so, I'll definitely take this one into consideration on my next DVD Player upgrade... Smile

Nobody really supports them much less an HD DVD player (why would it?).

I saw a few that support it so I wondered about this one... :Smile

Of course, if I'll buy one, I'll probably play on it HD-DVDs, but you know, I'm still downloading from time to time (Shhhhh....) some HD "avi" files, as well as "*.ts" HD files, so it would be great if I could play them as well... Wink

Yeah, sorry, it does not support divx files.  It plays HD DVDs and DVDs.  Thats it.  Apparently Amazon is also selling it for $200 also

Thanks, like I said/assumed, no Divx file support... Sad

Anyway, it's still a VERY GOOD price for a HD-DVD!  Wink

I stopped by the WalMart near my office yesterday afternoon to make sure they had some in stock.  When I go there this morning around 7:30 they were taking names to reserve the ones they had available.  My buddy and I got the last two they had.  FYI - there is a form you can send in to get five free HD-DVDs posted at Slickdeals.net.  It says it's for the X-Box 360 but the form is also good for any Toshiba HD-DVD model.

Went to WallyWorld this morning at 6:30am and was first in line.  at 7:30 they started selling them. Bought one, nd tried to get back in line for a second, but they refused saying it was 1 per person/per store.....so, I went to another store by 8am and bought my second one.

I took the RED Pill and it tastes GOOOOOD!!!!

Does this mean that Wal-Mart will start carrying HD DVDs?  None of the Wal-Marts around me have an HD DVD movies.  They have Blu-Ray but not HD DVD.

The Wal-Mart where I picked up my A2 had a selection of both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray titles, however it was a bit sparse.  I actually have a Blockbuster near me that stocks both formats.  I was floored by this in light of the fact that BB has publicly announced they would only be carrying BD titles in certain stores.

very sparse in my area too.  My Blockbuster queue is full of HD rentals.

I hooked it up, and installed latest firmware.  Went to dinner while it worked.  Got back from dinner, and my wife didn't want to watch the 2 HD movies I picked up (Blood Diamond and Lucky # Slevin - We did see slevin in the theaters when it came out).  So we watched Triple X (xXx) on it.  I did see some more details that I never saw on my SD DVD player.

Also, I'm only using Component  and SPDIF as I do not have HDMI on my receiver or HDTV.

Oh, I love it...my wife seems indifferent about it.    Once good thing about getting the A2 is that it forced me to fix the few little bugs in the setup on my Harmony 880 and re-do some of the cabling in my entertainment center.

I'll try to get a few pics tomorrow and post them.
