Soundbar hookup ?

I got the Sony HTCT100 soundbar last night at fry's and I used the included optical cable to connect my tv audio out to the Sony box. But I never see anything other than 2.0 being picked up from the XBOX or the MEdia center.

Should I hook all the devices into the sony receiver instead of the tv?

Or do I have something wrong on the PC. I did go into the audio settings and THE ATI HDMI out will only let me test two front speakers. I would think that the receiver would cause it to see 5.1 even if it virtualizes them.

You need to use HDMI into the Sony subwoofer/receiver module. It can handle multi-channel LPCM as well as decode standard DD and DTS.

Your TV will only pass 2 channel LPCM if it passes anything at all, the TV is not designed to act an A/V switcher.

NOTE: Unless you have a brand new 5x00 series ATI card you will only ever get 2.0 LPCM over HDMI (of course it can bitstream standard DD and DTS like S/PDIF)

So should I see the receiver report a 5.1 DD feed? OR can I tell the system to use a spdif connection to send the audio from the integrated audio? Realtek I think is the chip on my 780G board.

The 4xxx cards will also do 7.1 LPCM, it is the 3xxx series that is restrcited to 2 channel LPCM.

You have to go straight to the soundbar from the PC using optical, digital coax, or HDMI.  It is a crying shame that TVs can't switch digital audio in 5.1 because that would make it so much easier for everyone.

I personally want 5.1 outputs on TVs with simple bass management so all I would need is a simple amp for surround sound but they don't do that for some reason.

I am using the HDMI out on the ATI 4550 card. And in the control panel I have been looking at the ATI settings. But I don't see anywhere in there to set the format out of the audio. All I can do is test the left and right speakers.

Now before I bought the discrete GPU I had mroe options with the onboard realtek audio, but I did not have the receiver then.

Is this an option I would see in the control panel or does LPCM pass thru natively.

Thanks.
