I got the Sony HTCT100 soundbar last night at fry's and I used the included optical cable to connect my tv audio out to the Sony box. But I never see anything other than 2.0 being picked up from the XBOX or the MEdia center.
Should I hook all the devices into the sony receiver instead of the tv?
Or do I have something wrong on the PC. I did go into the audio settings and THE ATI HDMI out will only let me test two front speakers. I would think that the receiver would cause it to see 5.1 even if it virtualizes them.

You need to use HDMI into the Sony subwoofer/receiver module. It can handle multi-channel LPCM as well as decode standard DD and DTS.
Your TV will only pass 2 channel LPCM if it passes anything at all, the TV is not designed to act an A/V switcher.
NOTE: Unless you have a brand new 5x00 series ATI card you will only ever get 2.0 LPCM over HDMI (of course it can bitstream standard DD and DTS like S/PDIF)
