Glad to see it confirmed but I'll wait for the low-power retail version.  SAS for home use is overkill for the increased price tag.

I'll be happy for it to just start driving down the price of the 2TB drives.  Smile

I just want two platter 1.5TB drives, although I'd "settle" for 2TB dual platter drives.  ;D  Seems to be taking forever to get beyond that 500GB density.

+1

I still have plenty of room on my 1TB drive (mainly because I am still using my tivo to record TV until i get either the ceton or SD CC tuner), but once you can get a 2TB drive for 100$ or so I will add capacity.

That's already started to happen.  When they were first introduced the going price was well over $250.  Now they're being advertised for $120 or less.

Yeah I came real close to biting on a 2tb deal for $110 the other day. I'm really really trying to hold off until they hit $100 (which at this rate will be within a few weeks I imagine).

We have been stuck on 2Tb way too long. I've been deleting any movies I'll never watch a second time to keep space down until drives drop in price. I am floating around 1TB of free space so I have a little bit of time. And hopefully slysoft will come out with a ripper to easily pull out just the main title file so I can go back through and free up some more space.

I've had to force myself to watch a bunch of TV so I could make room.  I have 3 1TB drives sitting at home as spares, but I refuse to install them as additional storage due to the number of platters.  Give me 1.5TB drives with 2 platters and I'll replace all 13 drives.... well, a few at a time, that is.

What is wrong with more platters?

Generally, more heat, more noise, and higher failure rates.  I know it's not exactly a fair comparison, but I have some WD 1TB Green drives with 4 platters and some Samsung's with just 3 platters.  The Samsung's (HD103UJ) are nearly 10 degrees cooler and much quieter.  It would seem the WD's are just inherently loud, while the Samsung's vibrate a lot (most likely due to the 7200rpm speed) and need to have rubber grommets to isolate them.  Once you do that, the Samsung's are nearly silent.  I couldn't make the WD's any quieter.

Well that didn't take long at all.

Since you seem to be getting what you ask for, how about asking for 1.5 or 2TB drives with 2 platters?  Or, 256GB SSDs for a few hundred dollars?  ;D

I'll be sure to ask for those, right along with some winning lotto numbers Wink

(I did bite on the 2tb drive btw)

holy crap, of course now I have to be made a liar because I can't afford to spend 100$ on a second HDD (and im not much of a fan of MIRs, though i didn't specify that at the time)

though on the good side I found out that I actually have a 1.5TB drive as my htpc storage at the moment and not 1TB as I thought so I am not nearly as close to needing more storage than I thought.

but yes, i will buy an extra harddrive when i can get a 256GB SDD (with trim, and 6Gbps sata, of course) for 200$ or when I can get a 2TB 2-platter drive for a 100$. no MIRs.

ok, tech companies: make this happen!

That's what the link I just posted above was about. And why I bought one. Wink

Aww, why the hate? Hehe. Rebates rock! They're just betting you're too lazy to send it in. Don't be lazy = win.

its also a no interest short term loan given to... well either the manufacturer or the retailer (im not pretending to know exactly when money changes hands)

True, but if you're comparing it to how much my money would have made if I'd held on to it myself instead of them having it, I'm still making out really well in the deal. The highest yield savings account I have is like 2%. And the most a rebate is ever for is like $40, tops. And they'll only have the money for at most 8 weeks. Chump change. In fact the added bonus from Bing Cashback makes up that difference.

In fact I'll use this post to further pimp Bing Cashback cuz I've gotten so much $$ back from it already. If you're not already using it, YOU SHOULD BE.
