OEM pricing for Windows Vista comes into focus

Versions are definitely coming in under MSRP. How about Ultimate OEM for $200?

When I saw these on Newegg I thought they were upgrade discs. Now it makes me wonder why MS is charging so damn much for Vista if this is how much the OEM version cost.

Oh, notice that they're around $10-20 more then the XP counterpart. Nice. Smile

because they can. as much as you & us here know about newegg, there are that many more people that have no idea about it, and feel safer going into a store & getting a retail box, with a pretty manual. it's not free to have a box in a retail store, so i'm sure Microsoft uses the additional revenue to just advertise even more. although people always ask me, "What's this Vista thing? Who makes it?"

juuuuuuuuuuuust kidding Laughing out loud

I've got a copy of Ultimate coming tomorrow morning from New Egg. I need to be on a plane by two so I'm hoping to get my lappy loaded and ready to go in a few hours. (famous last words)

Yeah the OEM pricing isn't a big deal, now I know I can wait to get a copy.

The OEM vs. Retail pricing had always been insane. If you look at a brick and mortar electronics store the full version of Windows XP Professional in a retail box is $299.99. I think us DIY'ers have just gotten so used to OEM pricing we forgot how nutty MS's retail boxed pricing has always been.

Yea, but look at the fine print of hte OEM...."This OEM software is intended for system builders only and cannot be transferred to another PC once it is installed."  So is M$ going to deny you the ability to "re-install" the OS is your HDD dies? or you change mobo, RAM,a dn other hardware??  I would not put it past them on the OEM versions.

HTPC: SageTV HD-300

Server:WHS on a Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H, AMD AM2 5000+ Black edition 2GB Adata DDR2-800 RAM,  HVR-2250, HD Homerun Tuner, Maxtor 25GB OS drive, 1-WD 1TB data drive, 2-Samsung 1TB HDD's, 1-500GB backup drive; SageTV for WHS.

That has been there for years. OEM versions of XP are also [hypothetically] licenced that way.

No luck on the Vista for the weekend. I was at the airport at 12, then got the delivery email from FedEx at like 12:37. I even thought about having my wife rip it to an ISO an upload it for me to our website so I could do it from the airport, and said 'Well now, that's just stupid, I'll see you on Sunday.'

Shady, I'm definitely formatting. I ghosted my machine as is, just in case it goes South very quickly. The drivers I got from Lenovo seem to cover most things, I'm a little worried to see if they've got the integrated EVDO issues fixed since RC2.
